  • General Baseball Thread - 2016

Pitcher's and catchers are reporting in Arizona and Florida. It's a great time of year, despite the fact that we have no football for six months.

In just eight short months, we'll know who the Rockies will be playing in the World Series!

(Even I couldn't type that with a straight face!)

Just bringing this over from the 2015 thread.

I hate the Ian Desmond rumored pursuit. What in the world would he bring to this team, other than a contract with money that could be spent elsewhere? So, let's say he takes them from 70 wins to 74 wins - what's the point?

Even if we completely overperform this season, we're still in the best division in baseball. I would rather take our lumps, and put away the money for next season.

In the National League, they are clear-cut contenders (Mets, Cubs, Giants, Cardinals, Pirates, Dodgers, Nationals, Diamondbacks) and clear-cut bottom feeders, most of them are rebuilding (Braves, Brewers, Reds, Phillies, Rockies, Padres).

The Rockies though are interesting because they haven't traded Carlos Gonzalez yet after a monster 2015 season and he has probably his most value now at two years left and no recent injury.

It's a long shot, but out of these bottom feeder NL teams, I give the Rockies the best chance to surprise. It's a shot in the dark, but as long as the Rockies hold onto CarGo, I could see why they add Ian Desmond since they aren't fully committed to a rebuild.

I wonder how the Yankees season will go. If and that is a big if, if we can stay healthy we have a chance to win the division and make some noise in the playoffs.
Our bullpen is loaded and we have a plethora of options in the minors should one of them falter but man alive, we badly need the starters and Tex to stay healthy.

What do you think of Joe Girardi telling the press that the goal is for Luis Severino to throw 200 innings this year? His previous professional high is 151 2/3 IP last year.

I have a severe disdain for the Yankees arm protection strategy. It does not work and hurts the players in the long run.
They did it with Joba, Hughes, Kennedy, Betances and others and they all got hurt at some point.
We have a minor league system filled with pitchers who have had season long injury issues. Limiting their innings does not work.

Let the pitcher pitch, if there is potential arm trouble then shut them down for a bit and let them heal.

The Yankees told their players to act more like Russell Wilson instead of Cam Newton when handling a loss, and Michael Smith thinks they could have come up with a better example.

Cam needs to get back to the SB in a hurry and win it. Otherwise.... all the venom thrown Elway's direction for not winning the big one back in the day will pale in comparison.

The Texas Rangers sign Ian Desmond to a one-year deal and forfeit the No. 19 pick in the 2016 First-Year Player Draft in the process. I am not a big fan of the move even though the Rangers have a need for a bat in LF. His bat plays up at SS, not in LF. Even though he's a good athlete, there is no guarantee he will be a capable defender in LF.

I thought the Pirates organization had turned the corner in being one of the best run franchises in baseball, but apparently that's not the case.

NBC Sports - HardballTalk: Gerrit Cole had a great season. The Pirates considered cutting his salary.

The Rockies are really, really bad. Unfortunately they probably always will be as long as anyone named Monfort is involved.
