Adam Vinatieri wants fg's 50+ yards to be worth 4 points. As ridiculous as this sounds, just think of the ridiculous events that this proposal, if implemented could lead to....
A team is trailing by 4 points late with 1 or 2 minutes left in the game. A team is in make-able 53 yard range, but wants to keep driving in efforts to score a go ahead td, as a fg would only tie, and leave time on the clock. So a team gets to the opponents 10 yard line but they face a 4th down. A fg does no good as they need 4, so I could possibly see a team line up a qb in shotgun, and a holder and kicker lined up about 25 yards behind the line of scrimmage. The qb takes the shotgun snap, turns around and throws a 20 yard strike to the holder standing at about the 33-35 yard line, he quickly sets the ball, and the kicker boots the ball through the uprights for a 51 yard fg to tie.
Maybe the NFL could counter this non-sense with make 4 point FG's not from what yardline they are kicked, but from the actual line of scrimmage. The NFL could make the 4 point fg line of scrimmage be the 33 yard line, as from this line, the customary 7 yard hold and 10 yard endzone would make for a 50 yard fg. In this scenerio, I can envision a qb taking a 25 yard sack to reestablish the line of scrimmage to the 33, so a 50 yard fg would be kicked for a 4 point attempt and potential tie.
Such ridiculous non-sense this proposal would lead to!
