This, and not because he isn't worthy.

My guess is his value to the team is recognized, and he's in line to replace Fox when he retires, which is probably not that far off, and will at the latest, coincide with Manning retiring himself. I think his stepping down will dovetail nicely with Gase's readiness to assume HC duties.
