bridgewater in discussions with the Bears

          https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...y-bridgewater/

Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reports that talks are underway between the Bears and former-Saints QB Teddy Bridgewater.

Florio added, "The initial numbers floating around (something in the range of $21 million per year) suggest that Bridgewater would be installed as the No. 1 option in Chicago."

            Falcons released RB Devonta Freeman.

Freeman had three years remaining on the six-year extension he signed in 2017. The Falcons are taking on $6 million in dead money to move on from him, but they get out of his $6.5 million salary this season. Freeman was limited to two games in 2018 and managed just 3.6 YPC in the 14 games he was healthy for last year. It's an easy decision to cut ties with him and reset at running back. 28-year-old Freeman won't struggle to resurface, but he's likely going to have to settle for a committee role.

Steelers placed the franchise tag on LB Bud Dupree.

Dupree set career highs with 68 tackles, 11.5 sacks, and 17 QB hits last year. The Steelers were expected to franchise him with no real progress being made in long-term talks. Dupree will make around $15.8 million if he plays under the tag, but he's a candidate to be extended before training camp.

Giants placed the franchise tag on DL Leonard Williams.

The Giants are tagging Williams as a defensive tackle, something he may file grievance on. There was talk of moving on from Williams, but the Giants like his presence in the run game and will bring him back for at least one more season. Under the CBA, tagged players are guaranteed 120 percent of last year's salary. Williams — who made $14.2 million in 2019 — should cost around $17.4 million.

Packers signed LB Christian Kirksey to a two-year, $16 million contract.

It's a better than expected deal for Kirksey, who is coming off two injury-shortened years. Kirksey reunites with DC Mike Pettine, who coached him for a pair of seasons with the Browns. This should help improve a Packers run defense that was among the worst in the league. Signing Kirksey suggests the Packers may let free agent Blake Martinez walk.

Bucs placed the franchise tag on OLB Shaq Barrett.

It's a sign the Bucs plan to let Jameis Winston hit the free-agent market. After a nondescript first five years in Denver, Barrett came out of nowhere to lead the league with 19.5 sacks last season. The Bucs aren't close to a new deal with Barrett but were never going to let him walk. Tampa may want Barrett to prove he's more than a one-year wonder before committing long term.

Chiefs placed the franchise tag on DL Chris Jones.

This was expected with Kansas City not making progress in long-term talks. Jones should be tagged as a defensive tackle after playing most of his snaps on the interior last year. He seems likely to sit out OTAs without a new deal. Jones would make roughly $16.1 million in 2020 under the tag.

            Falcons released CB Desmond Trufant.

He'll likely be a designated a post-June cut. The move saves the Falcons $10.75 million in cap savings and $4.4 million in dead money. Trufant had a career-high four interceptions before going down in Week 14 last year. The Falcons shopped him this offseason but were forced to cut Trufant after not finding any takers. A seven-year starter, Trufant slots in behind Byron Jones and James Bradberry as one of the top corners available this offseason. He won't struggle for interest on the open market.

Chiefs exercised RB Damien Williams' 2020 option.

Williams will make $2.3 million in the final year of his deal. He was limited to just 11 games last season, but Williams was Kansas City's best back when healthy. The Chiefs should still look to upgrade on him, but Williams enters the offseason as the favorite to lead the backfield in touches.
