                      I don't think they're comparable and here's why.

Pete Rose is completely different because outside influences are involved with his wagers. Just the bet itself is an influence that should have no bearing on the decision making of a baseball game.

The O'Dowd Report chronicled how Rose never bet on the Reds when Mario Soto and Bill Guillickson pitched. Those were two of his best pitchers! That's a major red flag.

We'll never know whether if Rose got in the red with a bookie and how that might have compromised an outcome with no other remedies to appease the collectors.

Gambling is just a dark influence that should never be associated with people involved in the game's outcome.

As wrong and unethical of what the Astros did, it's still team against team.

Sign stealing using extraordinary means has been known in baseball going back to 1951 with the New York Giants using telescopes and the Bobby Thomson infamous "Shot Heard Around the World HR" against the Brooklyn Dodgers.

It doesn't make it right, but clubs have to protect their signs at all costs even though the Houston Astros are using AI to decode them. Outsmarting, outmaneuvering the other team is part of the game.

Gerrit Cole is making over $1 million a start this season; a team has to realize the investment in these games is substantial and have to assume there's unethical behavior going on with so many dollars, and championships at stake.

Both the Astros and Rose committed disgraceful infractions, but Rose is on another plane of unethical activity. It pains me to say that because I think Rose the baseball player is everything I love about the sport. Him running over Ray Fosse at home plate might be my favorite baseball play of all-time.

It's not a matter of team vs team, it's a matter of unethical. You can't keep Rose banned when the Astros completed a sign stealing scheme from the top down that allowed them to win 2 pennants and a WS title. You're talking about something that effected the entire post season and landscape of baseball as a whole. Many players from that Astros team got paid in FA due to being on the WS winner.

That is far worse than betting on baseball.

We agree both Rose and the Astros are unethical, just the severity of infractions are different.

The Astros are still trying to win the game, which is what the viewers already expect even if if they are rooting against them.

In Rose's case, his wagers bring into question whether the Reds winning is the primary objective. Outside influences are affecting Rose's decision making as a manager, his actions as a player, and these choices may or may not be in the Reds' best interests.

Reds fans want to know that their team is doing whatever it takes to win the game, and you can't say that for certain when Rose has a wager on the game.

Gambling compromises the game's integrity more than the Astros' cheating. But just because Rose's gambling is worse, that doesn't mean the Astros' cheating scandal is not worthy of contempt and disgust.
