I've been digging through is stats for the past few days and while no one would mistake him for a top 5 Tackle in the League, he has been consistently middle of the pack in most statistical categories with an upward trend. Is that disappointing for a 1st round pick that was supposed to be polished coming out of College....I guess? But he has been a day 1 starter for us since signing and while his pass protection has only been above average at best and his mental lapses are incredibly frustrating, he has been an absolute road grader in the running game and is still on his rookie contract. I get that a lot of posters are still pissed that he isn't Ryan Ramczyk. But there seems to be some personal bias against the guy who overall is a solid OT on a cheap contract.
I agree with you overall. I think if he didn't commit so many bad, seemingly emotionally based penalties in games we wouldn't be as hard on him. He just seems to lose his **** in games and kill a much needed first down too much. otherwise yes, his skills are average out there.

QUARTERBACK (3): Joe Flacco, Drew Lock, Kevin Hogan.

RUNNING BACK (3): Phillip Lindsay, Royce Freeman, Devontae Booker.

      FULLBACK (1): Andy Janovich.

TIGHT END (4): Jake Butt, Noah Fant, Jeff Heuerman, Troy Fumagalli.

WIDE RECEIVER (6): Emmanuel Sanders, Courtland Sutton, DaeSean Hamilton, Tim Patrick, River Cracraft, Juwann Winfree.

OFFENSIVE LINE (8): Garett Bolles, Ja’Wuan James, Ron Leary, Dalton Risner, Connor McGovern, Elijah Wilkinson, Sam Jones, Don Barclay.

DEFENSIVE LINE (6): Adam Gotsis, Shelby Harris, Derek Wolfe, Dre’Mont Jones, Zach Kerr, DeMarcus Walker.

LINEBACKER (9): Von Miller, Bradley Chubb, Todd Davis, Josey Jewell, Joe Jones, Keishawn Bierria, Justin Hollins, Jeff Holland, Dekoda Watson.

SECONDARY (10): Chris Harris Jr., Bryce Callahan, Kareem Jackson, Justin Simmons, Will Parks, Isaac Yiadom, De’Vante Bausby, Jamal Carter, Dymonte Thomas, Shamarko Thomas.

SPECIALIST (3): Brandon McManus, Colby Wadman, Casey Kreiter.

Yeah, I agree with you. Hogan doesn’t make the team. Rypien is either the 3rd, or he’s on the PS and they only carry 2 QB’s on the roster.

One of most unreported items in camp this year, has been the effectiveness of the running game. Apparently Lindsay & Freeman are tearing it up, but it has been overshadowed by all the talk of the inconsistent and sloppy play in the passing game. But can anyone unseat Booker this year? Khalfani Muhammad has been pushing, but isn’t quite there yet. David Williams is back, but who knows.

According to reports, Juwann Winfree is currently on pace to be the 5th receiver. The 6th receiver is a fight between Cracraft, Langdon, and Trinity Benson(love that name!), and the guy that wins the punt return job will win the 6th receiver job, imo. Cracraft is hurt again, so he may already be behind. Langdon has flashed and is competitive, but it is Benson that is reportedly making plays every day, and apparently has legit burner speed.

Also, Jake Butt practiced for two or three days, and then got three days off to rest his knee. I won’t be surprised if he doesn’t make the team, but maybe is put on the PS if he is eligible. If they decide to keep 4 TE’s, Austen Fort is apparently making plays every day, and showing to be another possible UDFA steal.

I'm talking about all the mistakes made in drafts prior to the last two. And the jury is very much still out on the last two drafts. There's hope, but it's very premature to put them in "knocked out of the park" status.

Booker is fine as a 3rd RB that can pass block and catch out of the backfield for 5 touches a game. He's still cheap. As a 3rd RB, his passblocking may be the most important thing he can bring. I just hope that Lindsay and Freeman stay healthy. They were a pretty good duo as rookies. Add a year experience and a Munchak coached OL and watch out.

The Paxton Lynch pick kills what was otherwise a pretty solid 2016 draft. A whiff that big in the first round on its own takes you from a B to a C grade for the class. I know hindsight is pointless, but if they had stayed calm and just taken Myles Jack to be Trevathon's replacement, the 2016 draft class could be pushing for an A.

The 2016 draft minus Lynch was pretty solid. 13-15 were bad, as well as 17.

Yeah, not getting Ramcyzk was bad, hes so good. But Bolles has been about average, he hasnt been like Stephenson and Watson bad like some protray him to be.

Hopefully better coaching gets the best out of him.

But the fact that a rookie lineman with not a snap to his name is being asked to help solidify a whole side of a line instead of just his position should speak volumes about where Bolles is right now.

It’s not being overly critical to say that the expectations for the two players are completely different and that those expectations are a fair assessment of the players themselves.
I agree with you completely. For the most part we need to stay healthy and let Munchak develop these guys as a unit over time. Hopefully, we stay healthy.

One more Risner thing, then i'll drop it. The reason why I expect him to help solidify things is his body of work. I don't have the exact stats here, but I think I remember that in over three years of playing time (something like 2,600 snaps) he only had one sack credited to him. This guy is pretty good.

I think it still might be a little early to close the book on the '17 draft. Between Bolles, Walker, and Jake Butt it still has an outside chance of being a decent draft. But yeah, the 2013-2015 drafts are a huge part of the reason that the Broncos caved in the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

I have a theory. Elway was drunk and just thought they were as well.

Thanks for the camp reports, it’s getting me really hyped up about some of the young talent. I’m also climbing on the Flacco wagon because I don’t see Lock playing anywhere near the NFL level this season.

                          • For two days now it's been a Flacco-Hogan fest with no Lock updates. Nice to see we are mishandling another young QB. How does feeding Hogan reps help the Broncos in any way?
