                      My notes on Jewell:

                      LB JOSEY JEWELL IOWA

Penn State (2017): Playing ILB. Well, he’s not fast, that’s for sure. Walled off by OC on inside run. Speed definitely an issue, but mitigates it some with taking good angles. Man coverage on Barkley, this isn’t going to end well, catch over middle, only thing that stopped him was he slipped. Beat OC shooting gap, stuffed run. Avoided cut block by RB, stuffed run. Nice job swatting down ball near the line. He’s really good at impacting passing lanes, this is a normal occurrence. Blitz up middle, swatted down ball. That looked pretty quick. Stuff on QB on read option keeper. And, jumps and swats down another pass at the line. It’s getting ridiculous now. East INT, QB got his and ball just went right to him. Got worked by Barkley on inside run, just put some wiggle on him and broke his ankles. Tackled him next play on short yardage near goal line on inside run. And then stuffed the QB on a sweep the play after that. Guess he doesn’t like being made to look foolish. Missed an arm tackle attempt on Barkley at sideline, resulted in big run. It’s hard to fault him with struggling with Barkley’s quickness. Does a pretty good job of getting off blocks and making plays. Doing all this tape, it becomes pretty clear the best ILBs are the ones that almost just ignore the fact an OG is shoving on them and instead just keep watching the play and flowing to the ball. Pancaked by LG. He’s going to struggle with elite speed, but he has legit sideline to sideline capability. Very active LB, cleans up a lot of tackles. Blitz up middle, stoned by OC, rip move to disengage, helped tackle RB outside. Always high effort. Had made a few nice tackles on Barkley either from the side or even chasing him by taking good angles around the edge, even cut him off on what looked like a sure TD reception down sideline. Also, had a nice diving drag down tackle on Barkley after he caught a crossing route from zone coverage. That was a nice play. Instincts, angles, good enough athleticism. Really like him as a MLB.

Michigan State (2017): Playing ILB. Nice job in coverage on RB when he leaks out. Free sack on QB, was already coming up on him and QB tried to tuck and he stumbled around. Fought off block from FB, but RB broke his arm tackle, everyone kind of did their job on that play. Stuffed RB on inside run in short yardage. Continually does a good job of disengaging from OGs at the second level, can tell he’s used to them being on him, and he doesn’t care. Slapped away pulling RG’s hands, shoved him off, stuffed RB in hole. The dude is so polished at stopping the inside runs. Good angles, good lateral chase. Speed isn’t great, but he makes up for it with intangibles and effort. Blew up RG into the RB to stuff run. Stack, shed, stuff run. This is a clinic. Nice job jumping up and impacting passing lanes. Has a really good feel for runs are going, just kind of flows to the perfect spot to burst in and stuff the play. Will put him out in coverage over the slot at times, he looks decent in his zone drops, I think he can play on passing downs. He had about five or six inside runs that he simply destroyed that I didn’t comment on because it’s the same play I did comment on several times already, he just read and reacts, instincts are great, crushed the RB in the hole. If they try and block him with an OG, he usually, but not always, beats that and just disengages and smashes the RB. Absolute monster in the middle.

Ohio State (2017): Playing ILB. Struggling a little bit with all the read option and RPO stuff OSU is doing. He’s a read and react LB, so anything that makes him pause and not react is a negative for his game. Blitz off edge, redirect inside did get home, but he missed sack when Barrett cut outside and he fell down. Has slipped three times early in this game when trying to change direction, that’s abnormal for him. Nice job in zone reading QB eyes, cutting inside and swatting down pass. Nice hard form tackle on QB on keeper. And again. Nice blitz up the middle going outside the RG for a pressure. He has some burst when going straight forward. Is looking really good in zone coverage on crossing routes, he flows with them, eyes on QB, good instincts, will switch off on receivers as the exit and enter his zone. Blitz off edge, had sack, but slipped again. Footing issues aside, thought he has a solid game in all aspects. Overall, I think he’s a complete package as an ILB against the run and pass. Can blitz, plays zone coverage well, strong tackler. Athleticism looks pretty average, but his instincts and effort cover up most deficiencies there.
