Obama to Russia: Action in Ukraine has costs
Simferopol, Ukraine (CNN) - Tension dramatically mounted in Ukraine's Crimea region Friday as its ambassador to the United Nations warned Russia against any further violation of its territorial borders, a warning that came as the United States urged Russia to pull back from the region or face possible consequences."We are now deeply concerned by reports of military movements taken by the Russian Federation inside Ukraine," U.S. President Barack Obama said in televised comments from the White House.

"...It would be a clear violation of Russia's commitment to respect the independence and sovereignty and borders of Ukraine and of international laws."

Obama said any violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity would be "deeply destabilizing, and he warned "the United States will stand with the international community in affirming that there will be costs for any military intervention in Ukraine."

Russian spy ship docks in Havana during surprise visit to Cuba

A Russian spy ship has slipped into Havana for an unannounced visit, a day after the country's defence minister announced plans to expand Russia's worldwide military presence.

The Viktor Leonov SSV-175, part of the Vishnya class of intelligence ships, quietly entered Cuban waters this week and docked at a cruise ship terminal on Thursday, its crew casually taking in the view of the old colonial section of the Cuban capital as passersby looked on in surprise.

Russian warships have come and gone in Cuba since the collapse of the Soviet Union, usually with much publicity and the opportunity for Cubans to visit the ship. This time there was no mention in the Cuban state-run media.

On Wednesday in Moscow, the defence minister, Sergei Shoigu, said Russia planned to increase its military projection abroad, including in Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua.

The Russian navy intelligence vessel in Havana was commissioned by the Soviet Union in 1988 near the end of the cold war. It is outfitted with electronic surveillance equipment and missile defence systems and is a signals intelligence asset of the Russian navy, according to the Russian government.

The 94m(309ft) ship was receiving food, but no maintenance or fuel, port employees said.

A Russian embassy official described the visit as friendly, saying members of the crew joined Havana officials in laying a wreath at a monument to Soviet soldiers.

"It was scheduled to stay three or four days. It should leave tomorrow," said the embassy spokesman.

Cuban official media made no immediate mention of its port call.

Locals shrugged at the ship's appearance, as well as Moscow's announcement on Wednesday that it was seeking permission for naval vessels to use ports in Cuba and other countries in Latin America, Asia and elsewhere.

"I think every country has the right to live the way they want to live and defend themselves," said Armando Torres, a 54-year-old cook who passed by the ship on his way to work in the morning. "We are a country that has always been oppressed and blockaded for so many years."

The former Soviet Union and communist-run Cuba were close allies for decades, and the Soviets built a major intelligence base on the outskirts of Havana that was closed soon after the demise of European communism.

Putin's out of control ego will put Russia into the equivalent of another Afghanistan which the people of Russia have neither the will, nor the capacity, to withstand. The strategy is not to raise an army to stop them, but to let them extend themselves to such a point that they bring about their own collapse. In the old days, this was called "giving them enough rope to hang themselves." This is the way all such grasps for empire end. Russia thinks they can control the outcome in Ukraine. They can't. And they're stupid to try.

What total bs -- grasps for empire? Ukraine has always been within Moscow's sphere of influence -- in the same way that Canada and Mexico are in the US sphere of influence.

If the neo Nazis in Ukraine (who supported Hitler in WWII against the Soviets) start killing Russians in Ukraine -- Putin will intervene to protect them.

The US would be very foolish to try and prevent this.

Obama's warnings against Russian intervention are total garbage - -given that the US spent $5 billion to destabilize Ukraine -- and "succeeded.."

When are you going to condemn US intervention? MHG

The usual patriotic USA loving righties jump at the chance to bash Obama instead supporting him against the communists they also hate.

When are you clowns going to wake up to the truth?

Which is that the real enemy we face is right here at home -- the NY bankers -- who in league with the London bankers are trying to rule the world.

Russia, Iran, Venezuela, China are no threat to the American people.

They do pose an economic "threat" to the collapsing US dollar -- which helps to explain the US hegemonic drive to destroy country after country.

The banksters' agenda is to loot the world. MHG

                              Here are a couple options.........

                              1. Eliminating Russia's membership in G8 and G20.

                              2. Removing Russia's membership in the WTO.

                              3. Cancelling US visas to members of the Russian Government and Ruling Party Parliament members and their families.

                              4. Banning import of dual-use technologies to Russia, that may help to develop their armed forces.

                              5. Freezing assets and open investigation of money-laundering activities conducted by Russian officials in USA.
