They certainly do not have a high operating efficiency.
They are one of the lower load output power options out there, but the "fuel" to run them is essentially free. They have a load output of about 30% compared to 40-80% (depending on fuel type and averaging about 50%) for other sources of power output. Once built, wind turbines require very little maintenance. I am curious whether or not there is info out there on the cost to output ratio of a wind turbine as to other fuel burning power generators.

Could ask my dad, he used to work on those and a lot of other power substations with the DoE. I'll see if I can get some figures.
