Denver police officers to wear body cameras; chief says it will create transparency with community

Move to use body cameras bring praise and concern

DENVER - Denver's police chief says he plans to require patrol officers to wear body cameras starting next year.

Officers working in LoDo are already wearing the cameras as part of a six-month pilot program and study by the University of Cambridge. A similar study conducted in Rialto, California, showed massive declines in police use of force and citizen complaints when police used body cams.

Denver Chief Robert White said Wednesday that the program has been successful, and he plans to purchase 800 cameras for about $1.5 million, some of that money coming from grants.

For the pilot program, Taser International provided 125 cameras and storage for video data at no cost to the citizens of Denver, officials said.

The manufacturer's website shows how the cameras work in low light, on the run and in slow motion. The cameras have a nearly 180-degree viewing angle and can store up to 18 hours of video.

Wow, what tremendous news. It seems to me the State of Colorado and Denver in particular are on the cutting edge of the nation on how they are solving their problems. Congratulations to the Mayor of Denver and the Governor of Colorado for making Colorado so awesome.

Don't worry, we've been spending billions militarizing the police state and policing the world. In a US Border control bill this summer, the senate gave a quarter of a billion to aid Israel. WTF does Israel have to do with our border control? We also seem to worry just as much about borders throughout the middle east as much as our own. Also, it would be nice to use the billions actually spent on our own border for immediate threats to our security and not waste it on pot.

Nice to see CO becoming more liberal.

Maybe this trend will eventually compel all the rednecks from Texas, Kansas, the deep south, etc., to go home.

What do we do with all the mobile homes if they all leave and how about the Dodge dealerships?

Use the raw materials to build a border fence around the state to make sure they don't come back.

I watched a really sobering documentary on Netflix a while back that examined the health problems fracking was causing a lot of folks on the western slope.

Of course, the oil company reps they interviewed took absolutely zero responsibility for any of these problems. Some things never change.

There's a particular pro-fracking commercial on the air here in Colorado which has a woman who portrays an engineer for the oil industry proclaiming hhow safe fracking is to the enviroment and how she wouldn't support it if it wasn't safe for her children.....wonder if she would serve them some well water from some of the areas inundated with wells.........I highly doubt it.

yeah I have seen it, made me sick.

It has pretty much been proven that Fracking it responsible for the over 500 earthquakes Oklahoma has every year.
