Several hundred riot police armed with batons, shields, tear gas guns and pepper spray sealed off the Legislative Council as a similar number of protesters charged their lines shortly after midnight, Reuters witnesses said.

Police used batons and fired pepper spray at protesters, who still managed to close off part of a nearby road. Several people on both sides appeared to be injured, and ambulances were called. Metal barriers were left twisted and torn in the clashes.

The Legislative Council is where debates will start on Wednesday to pass a new government bill that will allow suspects wanted in mainland China to be sent across the border for trial.

During the next global recession I sure am fearful of what may happen. Too many people and not enough sustainable resources to go around.

1 match to the tinder is all it will take.

Ship has long since sailed. China is one grand warning sign about what happens when economic deference is given to power.

      It eventually consumes everything.

Greed has always been the biggest hurdle for mankind. I don't think that will ever change.

Class awareness is the only thing that will beat greed. Everyone who is not rich need to put their slight disagreements to the side and focus on income inequality.

Yes China is just one side of the coin. We have done half the work for them since the 80s.

The theory was that free trade would inevitably liberalize the society.

It was a nice theory. Now we've got a monster to deal with.

Yup, I was a senate intern in 99 when a lot of the debate on weather we should give them favored nation status or not was going on. If we only knew then what we know now.

These "Hong Kong Kids" are completely disorganized and don't know what they are fighting against. It's essentially Occupy Wall Street. You have workers intermixed poorly with the students and no clear leadership. In the end, it doesn't matter much. China has built several new Hong Kongs since the 90's. Spread out, go to the mainland. Use your education.

Cost of living a month in Hong Kong dollars is about 24000 or 3065 USD. At least that's what it was when I stayed in Hong Kong for about 6 months with my wife. That was per person. Hong Kong is rife with housing corruption, which is what some of these protesters are upset about.

Trump's silence on this is another disturbing chapter. What's going on in Hong Kong should be front page in every free nation on the planet.

Best Trump can come up with... he hopes they can 'work it out'

Why would anyone hope that? Hong Kong is China's last hope at something better.

Trump identifies much more with authoritarian regimes like China than with free societies. He’s made that very clear.

Sad but true. These brave Hong Kongese are an example the world should take note of. While making known that China's reaction is being closely examined.
