  • Reparations for Slavery, Shelved for Decades, Are on the Table for 2020 Election

    April 11, 2019 9:32 a.m. ET

The Rev. Al Sharpton asked Democratic presidential candidates the same question at his New York conference last week: Should the U.S. government research how to make amends for centuries of enslavement and oppression of African-Americans?
One by one, the candidates said yes.
“There’s a direct connection between exclusion in the past and exclusion in the present,” Pete Buttigieg—the mayor of South Bend, Ind., who is white—told a mostly African-American crowd gathered in a Manhattan ballroom. “That’s exactly why we need a rigorous, serious study.”
Studying reparations for slavery has moved from theoretical fodder for essayists, economists and historians into the mainstream of Democratic politics, a phenomenon owed to top-tier presidential candidates embracing the idea and the single bill in Congress addressing it. That legislation, known as H.R. 40, was first introduced in 1989 and for decades was ignored by presidents and congressional leaders of both parties.
H.R. 40 would establish a federal commission to study how slavery and Jim Crow impact African-Americans today. The bill’s language calls for suggestions to “remedy” slavery’s aftereffects.

    Such BS

I'm reflexively opposed to reparations and then I read articles about the long-term impacts of slavery/Jim Crow/disenfranchisement on blacks, and you gotta think about it.

I hope they can come to some solution for this. It is long overdue. It’s going to be hell trying to determine who would be eligible for these hypothetical reparations. Is there going to be a situation where we have to get our DNA tested to see if we are descendants of an enslaved ancestry line?

I just really hope this doesn’t devolve into some political bull****. I don’t have a lot of faith, especially in the face of ignorance and a history of hatred from people with an inferiority complex.

I think it should only be granted to those who actually have living relatives from that time period. It is the only thing that would make sense in my mind.

Not just for slavery but they want it for native Americans as well. I don't agree with it all and think the left is throwing out a platform of open borders, reparations, late term abortions, and vast amounts of socialism. That could possibly push more Latino Americans who are hard working to the Republicans like back in the Reagan days. Open borders not good for Latino Americans, it waters down the blue collar jobs and pushed wages lower.

You realize no one from the 1800's is alive anymore right?

We had reparations, it's called affirmative action.

I was thinking more from the 50' and 60's. But i dont think realistically you can give reparations from the 1800's.

Look at other reparations in comparison with affirmative action.

                      No, affirmative action =/= reparations

                          Bingo.

Problem is monetary reparations are the absolute height of impracticality.

My sociology thesis in college suggested Free College as reparations ... but nowadays even that would have to be means-tested.

Stupid **** like this is what drives me crazy with Democrats. How about we address the problems of today rather than trying to fix the past? We can't even do the former, so worrying about the latter is absurd.

blacks don't need this ****. They are smart, doing better and better every decade, and will be better off without teaching their young they need special help to compete. Dems love to take care of their black base, keep them feeling like the victim who without govt help has no chance against whitey.
