Obama halts tighter smog rule, citing 'regulatory burdens'
Republicans wanted it shelved; critics see it as 'huge loss for public health'

WASHINGTON — Citing the financial burden in a struggling economy and after Republican protests, President Barack Obama on Friday ordered the Environmental Protection Agency to withdraw a proposal to tighten smog standards.

"I have continued to underscore the importance of reducing regulatory burdens and regulatory uncertainty, particularly as our economy continues to recover," Obama said in a statement announcing the order.

Environmental activists immediately pounced on the move as a retreat by a weakened Obama administration trying to cut deals with Republicans in Congress.

The withdrawal of the proposed rule comes two days after the White House, at the request of Republicans, identified seven such regulations that it promised to review after finding each would cost industry at least $1 billion.

The proposed smog standard would have required cities to lower ozone emissions, most of which come from power plants, vehicles and factories. It was estimated to cost anywhere between $19 billion and $90 billion, depending on how strictly enforced it would be.

The EPA earlier estimated the rule would save as much as $100 billion in health costs, and help prevent as many as 12,000 premature deaths from heart and lung complications.

Obama does nothing BUT bow to the Republicans he defeated in 2008.

Why can't a smart man like Obama realize the HE WON that election?

He has sacrificed his presidency to The Boner and The B*tch. I fear history books
will not be kind to Obama, history might end up calling him "the GOP's puppet."

That should be his campaign slogan in 2012:
"Elect me, and I'll do whatever John Boehner says."

President Mouse, why did you run for the presidency? So you could say,
"Thank you Sir, May I please have another?" when Boner and Cantor spank you?

Next week, Obama will unveil his "new jobs plan."

After 32 months of 10% unemployment for whites, 26% for Blacks,
Obama has finally decided to address the biggest problem on everybody's mind.

BUT...

The minute he opens his mouth, B*tch and Boner will say
"The President's ideas are dead on arrival," and Obama will surrender again.

We have a Mouse in the House.

Can anybody argue with that?

Doesn't matter.

The party would just replace Obama with another DINO/republican appeaser.

At least the unemployment rate for illegal immigrants will be low.

The dead on arrival thing is Harry Reid's favorite phrase.

Maybe the liberals need to come up with their own"teaparty". You guys bash them but the true followers (not the republican insurgents) at their core are just tired of the political status quo. You may not agree with what they want but at least they are trying to change things.

You know guys, I didn't post my Thread to start a pissing match (and Mods, would you please merge all three)-seriously, this is exactly what the economy needs-if you can't find the way to get John Q. Public to spend, then you have to ease Business Owner's concerns (and this is a big one)-

I seriously applaud the effort, we need to get people off of the street and back to being productive-

We don't need a tea party - we just need a candidate who is actually a liberal and who has a set of cojones (read: FDR/JFK/RFK-style cojones.)

Clinton was a centrist whose "third way" politics have long exceeded their shelf life, as evidenced by the Obama presidency.

But I'm not kidding myself - the people who control the levers of power in this country would sooner allow Ron Paul to make it to the WH before they would allow a true liberal to get there.

Maybe if this were 1992, but the last thing in the world we need right now is another centrist.

We need someone who is more like an FDR or a JFK.

Huh? WTF?

I just heard they lied to us again about the jobs picture for August. Initially they told us the economy created 93,000 new jobs.

Now we've just learned the actual figure is zero. I repeat: zero new jobs in August -- and keep in mind this is the time of seasonal construction.

The problem is not Obama, per se. he is only a puppet -- like Bush a puppet. The problem is that the US government was captured many years ago by Wall Street. The banksters run America -- and have for many years.

Only now it's out in the open. They were emboldened by 9/11 -- and believe they are untouchable.

Well -- are they right?

This is the question the OM needs to tackle -- instead of the non stop ranting about candidates. The political process itself is the problem. The proof of this is how the media has sidelined Ron Paul -- the only candidate who has called for an audit of the federal reserve.

Why have the other GOP candidates ducked this issue? And why haven't the press taken them to task for failing to do so? There again -- you see the problem - -the media too is controlled.

Only an informed public can make smart political choices -- so you see how deep the problem goes. Sad to say -- we are in a race to the bottom.

All US institutions have failed us. Only civil disobedience remains.

People want jobs and regulations and they just don't go together. Great move by Boehner to move the President right on this issue. If we can't get Obama out of office we can at least try to blunt his left agenda.

I thought Perry also said the fed needs to be looked at? To tell you the truth I haven't gotten that into it. I don't believe any of them anyways because they often just are giving lip service. Perry has a long record though and I look forward to diving into it a bit more.

You are partly right. The banksters and wall street were "handled" too. They did what the elites knew they would when the caused deregulation they killed the goose that laid the eggs for years with their greed.

This is Obamas smartest move since he scrapped eliminating the bush tax cuts. It's good when the President caves when the issue was pandering to the environmental left. Don't get me wrong the Darryl Hannas of the world are important also. Its all a puzzle and with the President makes the right decision, its always right whether his party wanted it or not. This is a smart move by Obama, he should let Boehner cut all those big new regs that will cost him a ton in jobs. Its a win win for Obama. he can just say I had no choice those righties forced me to scrap them, while at the same time adding jobs and cutting regulations.

The repubs have control of 1/3 of the federal legislature.

If Obama's getting trounced while playing 2 on 1, what on earth is this guy good for?

He could barely get his albatross Obamacare through while his party was playing 3 ond 0.
