Default Klis: Mebane and the Broncos in “serious” negotiations

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...randon-mebane/

Perhaps the best under the radar defensive tackle available in this year’s free agent agent class is getting attention from the team most desperate for defensive tackles.

Brandon Mebane and the Broncos are involved in “serious” negotiations, according to Mike Klis of the Denver Post. The Seahawks are also trying to keep Mebane, and ESPN reported that the Saints could be interested.

We think Mebane will get a surprisingly big contract. There just aren’t many quality young defensive linemen and the Broncos desperately need run-stuffing help.

Hopefully we can pull it off.... this would be another great move for Elway/Fox/Xanders.

Can someone breakdown Mebane's game?

I know nothing about him other than he's a DT from Seattle.

People are acting like he's the 2nd coming of Warren Sapp or something….

I would love to see the Broncos resign Marcus Thomas and get Brandon Mebane.

We need a DT and we're going to pay BIG for it. I'm worried about it as well and when we sign him people will be psyched but I hope that his contract isn't so ridiculous that it prevents us from signing other key positions.

But, still, if we're going to over spend on a player it better be a DT!

According to Rotoworld, the Seahawks are talking to Jimmy Wilkerson and spent alot of money on sidney rice and robert gallery. So I hope that's good news that the broncos have the upper hand to sign Mebane!

I was under the impression that he was more of a run stuffer than a penetrating DT

He did get on NFLN today, it would have been cool if Kahn had got him to hold his new Video card so I could see it and OK it for his newly built PC.

That way he would have accomplished something of value today.

Alfred Williams said the guy is average and stink agreed with him said we'd be better off with bannon and another cheap run stopper. They seem to think he is definitely not worth the money it would take to lure him away. I guess when you have garbage average looks good

Regardless of his play style he's done enough to be considered a talented young player. You also have to consider that at only four years into his career he's just now about to enter the prime of his career. It's entirely possible he will continue to improve. I'm willing to over pay a bit for that.

He is going to go all HAM for us if we sign him.

Unless it is for a big payday in which case he will go all Tommie Harris for us.

I wish we could have an average DL...

I also wish we could end the turn-style DT position it's been since when...well, ever, I suppose. IMO Mebane, if he's even average, could become the cornerstone of a multi-year average line, and at this point, I'm ok with that.

I heard that too and disagree, he is a above average dt in his prime. Heres a old video of him.

ESPN:

Grade 83 (80-89=Outstanding Player)

Expert's Take:
Mebane has been a productive starter on the interior of the defensive line. He has a short, wide body and good initial quickness, agility and body control. He is quick to read blocking schemes and locate the ball and knows how to squeeze the play down. He has just enough girth to hunker down and clog things up on the inside but is more effective on the move and penetrating to create problems in the backfield. He knows how to use his hands to defeat and shed blockers and does not generally stay blocked for long. He fights pressure but lacks the overall bulk and strength to fight through double teams.

He is an elite run defender, I really hope we sign him. He generates a decent pass rush, but in this defense it will be Doom, Ayers, and Von getting most of the pressure. We need run stoppers. He is perfect for us, and would allow those other guys to thrive.

The team needs defensive tackles. Mebane is a defenisve tackle. Therefore, the Broncos need Brandon Mebane.

Its logic.
