help new golf clubs - The Orange Mane

hi i am going to buy some new golf clubs im not looking to spend a ton of money anyone think of any kind that would be good for a lefty that is 5 ft 10?
i dont really use drivers because the drivers i have now are too flimsy

Or, you can go mid range and get some used Callaways at http://www.callawaygolfpreowned.com/ ... in my experience, Callaways have the best forgiveness, but they're a bit pricey.

Also, I'd check local thrift stores like Arc or Goodwill, you can find some good stuff there.

At 5'10", standard length clubs should be fine for you... I'm 5'8" and I use standard length clubs - just a tad long, BUT I get by.

Also, check out your swing a little bit... I'm left-handed, but I started righty because I play hockey right handed, and I play all of my instruments right handed but then I tried left-handed clubs and they really work a ton better.

i also started out righty and went lefty i like it much better i have a set now but they all seem bent. i need a good set maybe in the 300 range if that helps. i live in rapid city south dakota so were limited on stores

Look for name brand clubs within the last 2-3 generations. They can be had cheaply...just got a set of tigers 08 blades (VR TW) and cavity 4 iron for $170.

Srixon 701s are pretty sweet forged cavity clubs, and can be had for well under $200. If you apprise me what you mean by not a lot of money and your basic golf characteristics (age, swing speed, handicap etc., detailed as you like) I can probably point you in a good direction. I think I might be top 10 in the USA in obtaining maximum value (quality with respect to price) for all things golf.

A 4 iron for $170? Or four irons for $170 = I kinda feel like that's an important detail.

I have those cheap RAM clubs right now for all my clubs except my wedges... I got the Callaway Jaws X series 50 and 56.

I'm looking at the FT Tour and Diablo drivers next because I hear Callaway does make the most forgiving drivers.

As for my next set of Irons, anything goes.

Nope, there was an unrelated typo but $170 for:

6-PW VR TW Blades (2008 Tiger model)
5 iron VR Split Cavity
All DG S-400 shafts with new Golf Pride grips.

6 clubs that retailed in the $900 to 1k per set range in 2008.

No 4 iron, that was a typo. They are the best irons I've owned so far. I use my old 3 & 4 irons (Cobra Carbon CB). I think that blades are true game improvement when you get around a 10 hcp, I hit the ball so much crisper because I must pay attention to impact conditions. A well struck ball feels incredible. If you are serious about getting better, I would definitely get a set you can grow into. Cavities are fine, but no Big Bertha irons or the like...those will f--- you up long term.

TM R7 irons are still coveted these days and relatively inexpensive used....they forgiving and still rewarding at impact. I have two better player friends that have gamed them for years, not feeling the need to upgrade them.

The VR Split cavity 5 iron I have is also a great club, easy to hit and it feels great when ripping it.

im not sure what my swing speed is i have played baseball all my life and just now quit playing. i am 20 years old and am getting into golf i have only played on a 9 hole golf course so far and my average score on a par 29 course is about 38. i have a used pair of clubs that were ten dollars at a rummage sale so i wanted to get some that were not bent. i am good at hitting my irons straight but when i go to the drivers the ball always seems to tale away from me big time. i can hit a PW about 200 yards. also is it necessary to have a SW and all the wedges?

You should also pay attention to what ball you play. As a beginner, you want to play a ball with low spin. Try the Bridgestone E6 or Titleist NXT.

If you buy a used set, you would probably want to regrip them as well. It is pretty inexpensive. Golf Pride's website can fit you for the correct grip.

I just got fit for the Taylor Made Burner 2.0's and I absolutely love them. I have gone from a 20 handicap my first round this summer to a 13. Thats a legit handicap. Putt out everything, play as it lies, all penalties, etc. It is such a great game but so damn hard to be consistently good.

There is no way you should be hitting your PW 200 yards. Get it in your mind now that this game is about control and accuracy not length. You might be de-lofting the club and overswinging to hit it 200. You should hit your PW around 120-135.

If you want to get good quickly, you should spend all your time practicing from 100 yards and in. Get confidence chipping and pitching especially. If you can do that, your full swing will be that much easier.

Before you do anything, make sure you have the correct grip. Youtube has some really good stuff - pretty much free lessons.

You sure that's a PW you got there?

I think as you get better and better more wedges become more useful just for the extra control etc. but you can easily get by without them.

I don't hit it 200 anymore I used to when I first started. I am using all my clubs now besides the drivers because they always tale away from me

I would definitely not spend a bunch of money on a full set of clubs at this point.
On the other hand, you also don't want to learn and continue to develop your game on a sh*tty set (i.e., BENT!!). I can only imagine the compensations you're making just to hit the ball straight! That's actually quite impressive.

I would also suggest getting fitted at this point. A good pro should be able to get you decent pricing (if they're cool) and most importantly help you build a set based on your current game strengths and the absolutely necessities (e.g., definitely not every wedge under the sun). Then you can add to it as your game progresses. Of course this doesn't address your original question of where and I'm zero help there, not knowing the area. Perhaps ask around locally?

To echo Smurf, I've always had good luck with the preowned Callaways and often pros have some good contacts.

Finally, I would highly recommend investing in a couple of lessons early on - if you've not already done so. Particularly for an ex-baseball player. As a former softball player (because yes, I'm a girl and we can't play real sports like baseball and the real sports we play we play inferiorly) I initially learned on my own and would always revert back to a really flat swing. It took me a while to unlearn some of that. Although you said you hit your irons well, which is always my issue.

Anyway, you will get a ton of advice but if you're really serious about learning the game, I'd start with a fitting and a couple of lessons. Good luck!

I would suggest if just starting out take a video lesson or a series of 3 then decide on a used set of clubs on ebay no more than $100. Starting out odds are if you like golf and get better you will probbaly get a new set that you can play with for years within a few years. Right now I'd recommend a cavity back set from Callaway about 1-2 years old as a good starter set

Hitting a PW wedge 200 yards defeats the purpose of the PW . You should just play with a 7 iron (like Tin Cup) and choke up or down if you can hit a PW 200 yards

I highly recommend using one of these "periods" (a form of punctuation) at the end of a sentence. <------- This will greatly improve peoples' ability to understand your writing and they will not think you are an illiterate country bumpkin. In fact, even if you really are, they will have no idea whatsoever. Like I said, huge payoff.

played up in Vermont this week, and was playing with a putter I had found in my dad's basement. It looked just like a miniature golf club. Around hole #12 I left it near the green (out of drunken laziness) and kinda just decided to leave it there.

Two minutes later the course pro, Jim Remy (who used to be president of the PGA), rides up with the club and starts quizzing me about the putter. He tells me it was an old school Spalding club in mint condition with expensive original grip. After the round I gave it to him and he was pumped. He ended up giving me a box of Senior PGA Championship balls that were from the tourney the week before and a free polo.

Pretty cool.

Will a Callaway RAZR or a Taylor Made burner improve my game from the cheap RAM driver I'm using now? They're all titanium and whatnot... so I'm thinking they're basically the same thing, just a different name...

My bag has some of those cheap RAMs that I've started to upgrade with some Callaway clubs... the first thing I upgraded was my wedges, and I haven't noticed much of a difference between my Callaway Jaws X Series (52, 56 degree) and the RAM wedge (52) that I had before, other than the Callaway's being a little more consistant.

I'll tell you what I have noticed a difference in, though: golf balls. I was at the foothills chipping green the other day and chipped a bunch of range balls, then decided to bust out my Titleist Pro V1's - the traveled so much smoother and further that I had to choke my swing a little bit.
