Default Scientists Create First Memory Expansion for Brain

Scientists Create First Memory Expansion for Brain

Jesus Diaz — Imagine you can insert a memory card in your brain and go all Keanu Wow, I know Jiu-Jitsu! Reeves. It's actually not that far away: Scientists have created a chip that allows rats to instantly know things. It's amazing.

After studying the chemical interactions that allow short-term learning and memorization in rats, a group of scientists lead by Dr. Theodore Berger—from the University of South California's Viterbi School of Engineering—have built a prosthetic chip that uses electrodes to enhance and expand their memory abilities. The chip is capable of storing neural signals, basically functioning as an electronic memory, allowing rats to learn more and keep it in the devices.

Dr. Berger's description is almost frightening:

"Flip the switch on, and the rats remember. Flip it off, and the rats forget [...] These integrated experimental modeling studies show for the first time that with sufficient information about the neural coding of memories, a neural prosthesis capable of real-time identification and manipulation of the encoding process can restore and even enhance cognitive mnemonic processes.

The team's experiments—which have been in a paper called "A Cortical Neural Prosthesis for Restoring and Enhancing Memory"—could lead to the development of devices that may help people affected by Alzheimer's disease, stroke or other brain injuries. In fact, they are already working on the next step: Reproduce the same result in monkeys.

As someone who has had family affected by Alzheimer and other diseases, I really hope they succeed. As someone who would like to have the entire IMDB in his brain, I really hope they succeed too.

This is part of the setting in Perter F. Hamilton's "Pandora's Star," and "Judas Unchained." If you're looking for some quality Sci Fi, that's an excellent pair of books.

There's alot to be done there, and I'd rather see it done with neurons, but we're going there regardless. The tech is already in place, so the next step is to create isobiologic substances, dose the nuclei with some sort of neurtrophic-type material, and watch the magic happen.

Its entirely possible for, at some distant date, for there to be fixtures readied on the surface of the scalp that allow for matrices information to be directly implemented. So if a commoner in Russia is needed to work a complex machine, you just stick a chip in the fixture while he's asleep (wow, what dreams would happen that night as your brain sorts through and condenses the new information), and he wakes up a fully-trained professional...plus whatever behavioral "updates" that you want to install that pertain to those regions of the brain that you intervene on.

Can we get MB or is it KB? I want to upgrade like a computer.

Taco, maybe if you got one of these "upgrades", you could remember that we wanted OMane Shirts for tailgate parties.

This was developed to help people with dementia regain mental faculty. It is not a keanu "I know Kung Fu" chip. Gizmodo went all nerd on it.

If you are able to develop this for human use, its not too far removed from the Neo download. If you create memory storage, you can create stored memories.

You (as in the "I am" part of you that connects with self, individual identity) would die, and a different individual essence would receive your memories. That different individual would think and feel as though it were you, but it wouldn't actually be "you."

I'm confident science can eventually bridge that gap and murder the identity of my clone and preserve mine.

keeping it in a coma would be the simple answer. And Dramallama will be here in less then 60 seconds calling me evil.

Yeah, I'd prefer to keep it's brain inactive until I need him.

Unless I could make him do all my work for me...

Side note: I have a longstanding agreement with my gf that if it ever becomes legal to do so and I cloned her, sex with her clones wouldn't be considered cheating. Loop hole to monogamy ftw.

Not evil, just uninformed. Brain damage is inevitable in long-term suspension. Nervous tissue does not regenerate. Even if it did regenerate you wouldn't be able to create the chemical gradients that design your brain from the time you begin developing nervous tissue.

What that means is that his brain would be different, and thus his personality would be different.

The only way to keep himself the same would be to somehow develop an interface with immense computing power that could develop a new brain by recreating those chemical gradients and associations, which would require so much information that it just isnt likely to ever happen (because your brain condenses information every day).

So just like in the movie Total Recall.....instead of having to pay for an expensive vacation, I can have a "memory" of one implanted in my head!

Excellent!!

I've been negotiating this as the only allowable threesome for quite some time. Might be creepy for her but I'd be good with it.

The new line could be "What would you do if you could clone anyone?... Two chicks at once..."

And THUS we will have ourselves Real Manchurian Candidates.

If they can program some randam ass everyday person to be an expert assassin and take someone out. But having no memmory or recall ability to perfom such actions. Yeah- People are going to be offed all the time from this thing.

The gov. will develop it one step further and allow for the chip to be dissolved when hit with some raio waves or sometihng and oila no evidence and a perfectly good --Manchurian Candidate.
