Default Thank God for the lockout!

Chiefs tight end Leonard Pope saves six-year-old from drowning
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on June 13, 2011, 4:45 PM EDT

On an NFL news day featuring the latest Kenny Britt mishap and not else, it’s great to pass along a story of heroism.

The Americus Times-Recorder in Georgia reports that Pope saved a six-year-old child from drowning over the weekend. Anne Moore, a family friend of Pope, says Pope heard her cry for help at a pool party.

“All of a sudden, I saw Bryson going down in the water and I started screaming. Leonard was inside, and he came out of nowhere and dove into the water without any hesitation, cell phone in his pocket and all,” Moore said. “He saved my son’s life, and I am so thankful that he was there for me and my child.”

Moore has known Pope since he was a kid. As she points out, there are indeed some positives to the lockout.

“My prayers were answered by God when Leonard jumped in and saved my son,” said Moore. “The fact that he is normally at camp and could have been in Kansas City just proved to me that he was placed here to save my son from drowning, and I thank God that he was here.”

As Arrowhead Nation points out, Pope was not interviewed for the story and was not trying to get attention for it.

There’s not much else we can add other than: Nice work, Leonard.

Lockout or not... A woman should not have her child near a pool without adult supervision...by an adult that knows how to swim.

Kudos to Leonard for saving the child and a huge slap in the face to the woman that lets her kids play near a pool without total, responsible supervision.

No ****. It doesn't say she couldn't swim, but I assume that's why she stood there screaming. I can't imagine a mother watching her child going under who screams instead of jumping in to save him.

Good for him.

That said, why didn't she jump in herself? And if she can't swim, why is she letting her child play near a pool? The fact that she is impressed that he ruined his cell phone to save her child's life seems a little weird, too.

Maybe there are reasonable explanations. But something seems messed up about the story.

None of that has anything to do with Leonard Pope, though. He did the right thing, and should be proud.

That might be a little harsh. We don't really know what happen. It could be one of many reasons the kid was near or in the pool.

No, it is not harsh, Comments like yours is the reason so many children die every year in un-needed "Accidents" As a parent you have responsibilities, one is to be smarter than your child and protect them from things that are dangerous to a "Non thinking" child like ending up in a pool when you do not know how to swim or talking a car ride with a total stranger.... Both of these can be tragic/deadly to an unsuspecting child.

If you are not responsible enough to raise a child and protect them from harm, you should not be stupid enough to have children in the first place.

Wow. This is an incredible story. Way to go Pope!

It's interesting this happened to another Chief, given the Joe Delaney incident so many years ago. He actually gave his life because he didn't know how to swim. Just jumped out to help, and drowned himself:
Delaney, who was at the time living in nearby Ruston, Louisiana,[15] went to Critter's Creeks, an amusement park at Chennault Park in Monroe, Louisiana, with friends on June 29, 1983 and had encouraged children who were swimming not to go far out in the pond.[3] The amusement park has since been closed to the public.[3][7][15] Delaney dove into a pond and tried to save three children who were screaming for help.[3][7][15] The children were floundering in a water hole left by recent construction work.[3][14] The water hole, which covered two acres and was 20 feet deep,[3][16] was not intended to be a swimming pond but instead to be used to add aesthetics.[3][17] Despite his inexperience in swimming, Delaney tried to rescue the children.[6][18] One child managed to get out of the water with no harm and another was taken to an emergency room where he later died.[3][7][17] Police recovered the body of Delaney and one child.[17]

Glad to see this one ended with a much happier outcome!

On a related topic, everyone should read this article. It talks about the easily missed signs of drowning. Do yourself a favor and take five minutes to read it.

Great post, doc. Drowning doesn't happen like in the movies.
