Look for the Broncos to select Quinn or LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson with the second overall pick

Today's belief: The Broncos will draft Alabama DT Marcell Dareus No. 2 overall.

Why we don't believe: In their switch to a 4-3 defense, the Broncos have more needs than just defensive tackle. When coach John Fox was successful at Carolina, his defense was built around defensive end Julius Peppers, not an elite tackle. So it's a good bet that Fox would have taken Clemson end Da'Quan Bowers on Thursday if his knee was healthy. But with all the concerns about Bowers' knee, the Broncos likely will target North Carolina end Robert Quinn over Dareus. Dareus has what it takes to be a very good player in a 4-3, but he is much better in a two-gap role than in a gap-shooting role. In the end, the Broncos want to get impact pass rushers to upgrade their defense -- and Dareus isn't a perfect fit.

We believe this instead: Look for the Broncos to select Quinn or LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson with the second overall pick. Quinn is an elite athlete with excellent natural pass-rush skills and would provide the explosiveness off the corner that would complement Elvis Dumervil and give Denver two dangerous pass rushers. Getting an outside rush would enable the Broncos' defense to improve quickly. If the Broncos don't grab Quinn, expect them to take Peterson, who is an elite athlete with great character and intangibles. He would upgrade the corner spot opposite Champ Bailey and would eventually succeed Bailey as the team's shutdown corner.

What else we believe: The Broncos aren't going to take a quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick, but they could trade down to take a QB or grab one with their second- or third-round pick. The Broncos don't believe Kyle Orton or Tim Tebow is the long-term answer and want to add a young QB to develop.

Don't be shocked if executive V.P. John Elway makes an aggressive move to acquire Washington's Jake Locker, who shares many of the physical traits Elway had as a player and has the leadership skills and intangibles the Broncos want in a QB.

for the rest

Even though I like our DE set up with Doom and Ayers, I can live with Quinn if we trade down, but not at #2. Locker is fools gold. If Elway took Quinn at #2 and followed up by picking Locker (or worse still, trading up for Locker), I'd pull a Garcia

I'll add my random guess. Denver hopes to trade down a few spots (SF?) and come away with Nick Fairley.

Argh - again speculation that we'll take a QB early. I really hope that Elway and Co. are just really good at putting up a smokescreen and that they're actually completely sold on either Tebow or Orton!

Because, if this hasn't been a smokescreen its terrible that everyone knew about it so far in advance in a game where keeping your cards close to your chest can be so important, so bad that it would make me question the people we have in charge. Beyond this, it would simply make last years draft look even worse - and that would make me sad.

I really like Quinn's upside, but you can't justify selecting a guy at #2 who didn't even play last season. If we trade down into the 8-10 range, fine, although I like Doom and Ayers as the starters.

Quinn at 2 would be a big reach. If Dareus is gone, go with PP and then focus on DL in Rd. 2.

Bull.

The Broncos Brass have talked about how important it is to get a guy who can play for 10-15 years with this selection.

Getting Robert Quinn, who has a brain tumor and didn't even play football last year doesn't mesh with that kind of statement.

If it does happen, I will no longer root for this team, and I am dead serious. Even Quinn in a trade down is preposterous.

I pretty much agree with this, although I'd still root for the team. I don't see any way that Quinn is the target other than the brain dead take "Fox took a DE from North Carolina once and was successful, so he's gonna do it again", which has no merit whatsoever.

There were a lot of picks I didn't like that McDaniels made, and his use (or not) of certain players certainly miffed me.

And yes, if a team keeps saying how @ #2 -- you need a guy who can play immediately, start and be the face of the franchise for a decade to come, you don't draft a player who was not allowed to play for a year and has a serious medical condition.

It would have been like Shanahan drafting Darius Watts, but way worse.

Good thing we aren't drafting Quinn.

His brother sucks here.

I think were all kind of in information overload right now, even more so because with a top pick comes the increased attention that is normally not present in our previous 12-18 selection range recently. I think we are trending towards taking Miller or Peterson at #2 than going DT with our top 2nd round pick due to the depth present there this year. I just hope we don't take any offensive player till the 3rd round or later.

Quinn is a terrible pick due to all the concerns.

At one time I had a subscription to their publication. Their NHL coverage at the time kept shrinking, and NASCAR kept increasing. I asked them why the NHL coverage was so thin during the Stanley Cup, and they told me that people didn't care about hockey.

I dropped my subscription that day.

The best years of Fox's run in Carolina had a defense anchored by Kris Jenkins who was a 2 time all-pro and 3 times pro-bowler at the DT position, saying it was Peppers is a gross misrepresentation of the truth.
