Default Best and worst -first-round- NFL draft picks

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-draft-bestandworst

Quote:
DENVER BRONCOS

Best: S Steve Atwater, Arkansas, 1989

No, not John Elway, who actually was selected by Indianapolis and traded to Denver.

Eight-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time Super Bowl champion Atwater who was chosen 20th overall. Considered one of the hardest hitters in the NFL and one of the more versatile safeties. He also was a leader on defense on a team that featured Elway on offense.

Worst: DE Jarvis Moss(notes), Florida, 2007

Moss managed just 3 1/2 sacks in 3 1/2 seasons before the Broncos released him last year. Moss never succeeded as an end under Mike Shanahan in the 4-3 or at OLB under Josh McDaniels in the 3-4 defense.

Worst pick - Only one? I'm sure there should be many many more.

Moss was a bad pick to be sure, but Ted Gregory and Marcus Nash were FAR worse. At least Moss made a handful of plays.

Croel had a promising rookie season with 10.5 sacks. Gregory and Nash did NOTHING.

A shocked Dan Reeves commented "I'm taller than he is" upon meeting Gregory after the draft. After the Gregory incident the Broncos began meeting with potential draft picks prior to the draft.

Tommy Maddox. Who drafts a QB when you've got a franchise QB in his prime?

These were 2 I thought of immediately along with Tommy Maddox and Alton Montgomery.

We actually had a lot of good 1st's back when...Atwater, Smith, Riley Odoms, Gradishar, Otis Armstrong, Louis Wright and my favorite Floyd Little

Just a point of fact that the writer missed...

Our trade was with Baltimore, not Indy. Indianapolis did not have a team in 1983.

http://www.pro-football-reference.co.../den/draft.htm

For best 1st-rounders, obviously:

Floyd Little, HOF
Dennis Smith
Trevor Pryce
Louis Wright
Randy Gradishar
Riley Odoms
Chris Hinton (traded to Indy for Elway, stellar career)
Kermit Alexander
Merlin Olsen, HOF (heh-heh)

Denver also drafted (heh-heh):

Curley Culp
Hewritt Dixon
Paul Krause, HOF
Bob Hayes, HOF
Wally Hilgenberg
Dick Butkus, HOF
Randy Johnson
Jerry Jones

For 1st-round busts:

Previously noted Ted Gregory, Marcus Nash, and add:

Willie Middlebrooks
Ricky Nattiel
Bobby Anderson
Jerry Shay
Steve Shindler
Kelvin Clark

Some notable picks (2nd-round and below):

Marlin Briscoe (the first African-American QB to start an NFL game, had a good career, was a major contributor to the Dolphins' SB wins)
Billy Thompson (borderline HOF'r, 40 INT's, one of the best punt returners in NFL history)
Simon Fletcher (should he be in the HOF with 97.5 sacks? Major contributor to Denver's best teams)
Chris Hinton (traded to Indy for Elway, one of the best OT's ever)
Gary Kubiak
Rulon Jones (52.5 sacks)
Rubin Carter (NT with 24 sacks)
Mike Harden (38 INT's)
William Gay (44.5 sacks)
Rick Upchurch (still one of the top punt returners in NFL history and a major contributor to Denver's best teams)
Steve Foley (44 INT's, still the Broncos leading INT guy. Boy, Denver had some good safeties back in the day. Not so much anymore.)
Barney Chavous (DT with 23 sacks)
Tom Jackson
Lyle Blackwood (35 INT's)
Karl Mecklenburg (79 sacks, 5 INT's)
Vance Johnson (37 TD's)
Mark Jackson (29 TD's)
Tyrone Braxton (36 INT's)
Le-Lo Lang (5 INT's, heh-heh)
Terrell Davis
Tory James (39 INT's)
Brian Griese
Desmond Clark
Mike Anderson (42 TD's)
Deltha O'Neal (34 INT's)
Clinton Portis (80 TD's)
Jay Cutler (104 TD passes, 80 INT's)

Overall, the draft picks in the 2000's have been less impactful than those in previous decades.

The 2000's decade pretty much sucked, and there we are in this 2010 decade trying to rebuild. Eh, what the hell, I feel positive about the coming season.

Well, if you're going back that far, the best pick in the franchise history relative to his effect and stability of the franchise has to be Floyd Little. Ted Gregory absolutely is the worst, although the obscure choice of OT Kelvin Clark in 1979 still reeks 32 years later, or is that Marcus Nash?

One pick that we missed out on was during the early 60's...we drafted Dick Butkus, but he went to play in the more established NFL....

not sure, but didn't Mike draft Cutler when Jake was in his prime and had just led us to an AFC title game appearance...maybe you should ask him.

As far as the Maddox pick....everyone b****es about this without looking at it objectively. Everyone assumes Tommy was drafted to be john's immediate replacement, when that is nowhere near the truth.

[] Tommy Maddox at the time was considered a top notch player

[] John Elway at the time was entering his 8th season as our QB, and the player's union was pushing for unfettered free agency.

[] John's relationship with Reeves at the time had moved from tolerable to uneasy at best, and there was no telling how much longer john would want to continue to play for Dan. In fact after Dan's dismissal, Elway had commented that he'd have retired if Reeves was still the Broncos head coach.

[] Dan was thinking that he had to prepare for the imminent departure of john and needed a QB he could groom and have in place when/if that day arrived

so the bottom line is the Broncos had a tense relationship between coach and QB, and you're wondering why he drafted a QB as a contingency plan?

Ricky Nattiel isn't really fair since he blew out his knee.
