It's a really tough call, but after seeing both guys up close in small club settings and in various fusion ensembles on dozens of occasions, I think I have to give the edge to Si Phi - probably because he can hang with the most challenging fusion stuff and ream like a mof_ka on the rock and pop stuff.

currently....Dixie Chicks ... Taking the long way. If you for get all the controversy and just listen to the music with an open mind, this is a great album.

Denver. Please never associate them with Boulder though. In fact, I'd prefer if everyone forgot they were from this state.

I can't promote this CD enough....easily the release of the year thus far IMO.

Cool Cleveland Sounds
Diamond Star Highway
Rainy Day Saints
Get Hip Recordings

If youre familiar with Dave Swanson's work under the moniker Rainy Day Saints and Saturdays Haze technically his first solo effort well, you know exactly what youre in for with Diamond Star Highway.

If youre not familiar, let me give you the quick-and-dirty: delicious power-pop and fuzzy garage rock, with quirky post-punk edges. A member of many an Ohio band (Guided By Voices, Cobra Verde, New Salem Witch Hunters, Reactions, Death Of Samantha, et. al) Swansons got a jones for big, fat melodies, groove-laden tunage and that psychedelic jangle of vintage Brit-pop.

Thats exactly what you get with Rainy Day Saints full-band follow-up to Haze. Call it truth in advertising. Theres a reason why Haze received great reviews and the Little Steven (yes, he of the Underground Garage) seal of approval. Its true-to-life real rock and roll that touches on everything from Cheap Trick and Big Star, to the Barracudas, Sparks, and Todd Rundgrens former outfit, the Nazz.

This time around, Swanson pulled together a group of old friends, all Cleveland band vets to create Diamond Star Highways 11 tracks. Rainy Day Saints currently features Brian P. McCafferty (bass), Keith Pickering (guitars) and Scott Pickering (drums) and they all rock out in what feels like a natural extension of Saturdays Haze. It's well-produced, well-constructed... thoroughly well-done.

Highlights of this gem include the leadoff track I Dont Follow, the driving No Surprise, Dont Look Away and fantastic covers of Dead Boys Sonic Reducer and the Leaving Trains Terminal Island. And yes, it rocks. Expectedly. A simply great record.

Celebrate the release of Rainy Day Saints new CD, Diamond Star Highway this Sat 5/27 at 9PM. Joining the group on the bill will be Mike St Jude & the Valentines, K-Ration and DJ Miss Bangs. It promises to be one rockin night, so dont miss out.

Get your tickets at http://www.BeachlandBallroom.com'. Beachland Tavern, 15711 Waterloo Road. You can visit RDS at http://www.RainyDaySaints.com. From Cool Cleveland contributor Peter Chakerian peter@coolcleveland.com

Yay for albums leaking to the internet before they're released in stores!

Currently listening to:
Busta Rhymes - The Big Bang
Ice Cube - Laugh Now, Cry Later

Ice Cube man, he came strong. His album is so good. Busta's is pretty hot too, I think his was hyped so much that he couldn't possibly live up to it, but it's a strong effort.

Although I will say this, Ice Cube, despite his album being amazing, gets a huge thumbs down for this line:

"...I'll put your ass in a choke hold, Stone Cold, oh yeah **** the Broncos, Raider down..."

Is ice cube still preaching the vileness of white amerikkka - or did he soften since white $$$ spends the same?

I love his music, but to have the level of hate on 'predator' is sometimes staggering to me.

I thought death certificate was far more racist than that album.

I like his style of rap, his violently racist fantasies have turned me off.

It's ironic that racism coming from a black person can make him millions while the others will get driven to the ground.

The new album from the Boss, We Shall Overcome: The Seegar Sessions, is truly outstanding. It is a collection of folk standards inspired by the music of Pete Seegar, all recorded in three one day sessions, each song recorded in one take with no rehersals. The music is a wonderful gumbo of Americana, at times harkening the feel of the negro spirituals, at other times borrowing from the Dixie swing sound of the 30s and 40s, still at other times drawing from the blues, etc etc--sometimes all in the same song. The highlight is Springstein's arrangement of the great negro spiritual, "Mary, Don't You Weep". Amazing record. I give it my highest recommendation.

Diverse, yes, but these are my albums of the year -

NoFX "Wolves in Wolves clothing"

The Sounds "Dying to Say This to You"

In Flames "Come Clarity"

Fort Minor "The Rising Tied"

The Fray "How To Save A Life"

Talk about diverse...
I got NoFX - a PUNK band,
The Sounds - a SYNTH-ROCK band,
In Flames - a DEATH METAL band,
Fort Minor - a RAPPER, and
The Fray - an ACOUSTIC band.

I'm like a chameleon, lol
