I've been on a huge Barenaked Ladies kick lately. They're my big guilty pleasure. I don't know what it is, they just write music I like. "Gordon" is one of my favorite albums of all time. Plus, Steven Page (one of the lead singers) just came out with a solo project called "The Vanity Project", so I've been spinning that.

Any fans of Holly Golightly on the board??

I'm gonna check her out this Saturday along with The Woggles (killer Athens GA garage band) and my fave local act The Priests......it should be cool, I'm looking forward to it.

Holy hell! Why was I not informed of Jeff Buckley previously in life?!? I'd always heard of him, heard he's a great musician and everything but never checked him out (my fault). Yesterday, I was hanging out with one of my buddies and I heard this incredible music. I asked him what it was and he replied "Grace" by Buckley. I immediately went out and bought a copy. It's all I've listened to since.

OK Hogan, need your expertice.

Finally got to hear the Pietasters......they're badass. I heard "Out All Night" on NCAA Football 2006 and then Fungus (XM 53) was playing another of their songs that I forgot the name of. Now I'm hooked. Best album to get? AllMusicGuide recommends "Willis". Usually I trust them, but want your feedback on this one.

I know this'll come across like some mindless fan who's unable to stand back and look at his fave band objectively but really.....you can't go wrong with any of their releases to date. Once you get them all, you can see the progression from an ace Ska band to one which masters a mix of Ska, Soul and Rock more effectively than any other band out there today IMO.

If I was just starting out, I'd go with Willis, Awsome Tape Mix #6 and Turbo....just because they can be found now much cheaper than the 1992-1996 collection.....but you'll want that one too once the others suck you in....being it a collection of early stuff, the production leaves much to be desired on the self-titled release and Comply, but it does contain the Strapped Live album which illustrates what a great and fun band they are to catch live.

They also have a DVD out that's pretty cool...Live At The 9:30 Club shows them delivering to a jammed packed crowd in all their drunken glory.

Pietasters releases can be found very cheap on Amazon, I'd try there....hope that helps.

Thanks bro. I checked out Circuit City and found nothing (shocker), so I guess I'll do the amazon route. Probably start with Willis and go from there.

OK - time for this week's music joke:

Q: You're standing in a dark alley and being threatened from both sides - on one side is an escaped con with a butcher knife and on the other side is a ferocious pit bull with rabies. You've got a gun but only one bullet....who do you shoot?

A: Kenny G

One of hte greatest things I have ever read was an article by Pat "God of Guitar" Metheney where he just ripped Kenny G a new one. It was BRUTAL. I need to find that online.....

Talk about irony....I've heard just as much sleep inducing, self-indulgent virtuoso wankerama from Metheney as I have from Kenny G.

I like some of Pat's stuff, in small doses....but to be honest, most of it is like Sominex with a beat.

Sounds a little like Frank Black (Teenager of the Year) meets ska with a little Van Morrison soul in there.

Interesting assessment.

They're not the best songs to have put out there IMO.....but you get the idea from them well enough. "Rachel" & "Malmo" are the most recent and most indicitive of the style they're moving into.

If they ever come to your area, you wanna check them out live......they're amazing live and always a lot of fun.

Morrison is pretty cool stuff...I've got no problem with Van at all.
