It's my least favorite song on Close To The Edge if that tells you anything.

Aw man...youre a wierdo.

Pedal steel is a very expressive instrument. Not having to fret the notes allows a slick, fluid presentation of melody. A great steel player can put a guitarist to shame.

Pedal steel just doesn't do it for me.....if it did, I'd like a lot more country music. I'll take some sloppy old bottleneck instead, thanks anyways.

Im not a fan of the country music genre either. However, a great player is a great player.

That maybe.....but it doesn't mean they are enjoyable if you're not a fan of the instrument. Ravi Shankar is this great sitar legend, but you wouldn't find me staying in a room he was playing in for more than a minute let alone the 5 hours or so he plays for.

Aww screw it...I need to laugh, here's the Dead Milkmen

I always loved Jimmy Page's use of pedal steel on songs like "That's the Way" and "Tangerine" from Led Zeppelin III.

Also, check out the song "Theme from Skint (See You Later Liquidator)" by Humble Pie (from the album "Humble Pie") to hear some more awesome pedal steel sounds in rock context.

David Gilmour's use of lap steel on tunes like "Breathe" and "The Great Gig in the Sky" deserves honorable mention too.

Been listening to Elegia by New Order recently, when I'm not rocking the Juno OST.

I haven't heard that one in awhile...I just might have to dust that one off when I get home.

I had Adrian Belew's Lone Rhino/Twang Bar King twofer on yesterday mixing in with The Who's By Numbers, The Best Of Procol Harem and The Drifters Golden Hits as a coolout.

I really like "Born In The Rain" but it seems to be the only track there where he really cuts loose in the Hendrix/SRV mold, the rest sound like Pat Metheny trying his hand at blues themes presented as lounge music, which (for me) is fine.....but only in limited doses. "Widow", "Six Eight" & "Ghouls" take an awful long time to really catch fire, almost too long.

So, what's more indicitive of Landau's song style? This long build up type of approach or that of "Born In The Rain" where he hits the ground running? 3 songs to 1 is a good indication, but far from conclusive.

I see his brother is married to Michelle Branch...lucky guy. She's long been one of my fave pop singer/songwriters.

Sounds really familiar to me, but I can't quite place it. I like "2 Steps" the best of the lot...bright, tuneful, hooky.

The stuff on the newer record is a little more XTCish...I highly recommend the songs "light" and "00:15:00"...sharp, clean, intelligent pop rock with good guitar work and a melodic and tight rhythm section.
