Default Good news!

Good news! The Denver city council has voted to raise the pay of public officials by 6.6%.

I know times are tough for everyone, but I was losing sleep at night thinking about those poor politicians. How were they going to afford their country club memberships? What would they do if their expense accounts couldn't cover all of their dinners out? Would they be able to afford their vacations in this tough economy? How would they get by on salaries and benefits packages worth only slightly more than $100K per year?

Well, we need not fear any more! They are going to be taken care of! That's such a relief. I feel bad for all of the middle class folks who are out of work of course, but if these politicians were not given a raise, I really don't know what I would have done. I can sleep well at night again. Thank you Denver city council... you know what's really important.

To paraphrase Tiny Tim, "God Bless them all, every politician!"

Why the hell do politicians get to decide their own salary?

okay well I read the article, granted I don't think any of them are making exhorbitant salaries, even with the raise, but it's not exactly the best time to do the increase. The Federal government is actually on a pay freeze, so there will be no cost of living increases, which normally are about 2.5% a year, nor will there be any performance awards this year either. Denver salaries for their council sound workable, unlike I seem to recall in Phoenix they made like 35K a year or something pretty low especially considering the cost of living on Phoenix. I think they raised their salaries a few years ago, but not sure.

you must have missed this part.....

Denver is the only large city in Colorado that pays its council members a living wage — $78,173 a year, plus about $30,000 in benefits.

The raise would give the council members an annual salary of $83,332 by July 2014. The council president makes about $10,000 more.

The mayor's salary will grow to $155,211 from its current $145,601. The salaries of both the clerk and recorder and the auditor would be $134,235, up from their current $125,924.

public officials are paid by tax dollars. the government puts a gun to my head and tells me if i don't pay their taxes, they can/will confiscate my property or can/will put me in jail, or both. i never get to vote on what salaries are paid to public officials. i am expected to shut up and pay. every year, my taxes go up.

Councilman Paul Lopez said the raises were necessary to make sure a working person with a family could afford to be a council member.

"What you are creating is a hobby for the wealthy," Lopez said. "How is a working person from a poor community who has a family going to be able to do that? That's a natural barrier."

who can't afford to live on $80,000?

No I read that. if their full time job is being on the council they should have a living wage. Now, if it isn't their full time job, that's a different story all together, but if what they do is fulltime dedicated work on the council then it's fair given the rather high cost of living in Denver.

The same reason corporate CEO's do, the compensation review committees are all bought and paid for and whenever challenged the ridiculous justification of "we have to retain and recruit top talent" is trotted out then roundly supported by lobbyists.

From the article...........

"Six council members are running unopposed to retain their seats."

At a time when jobs are scarce you'd think plenty of people would toss their names into the hat. Millions of people in the front range and the same people that voted themselves a raise will slide right in unopposed.

I know some of these people personally at let me tell you it's pretty scary they have the power they do.

Sadly the public doesn't hear about stuff like this until AFTER the vote but that is typical and the way they like it.

What's also interesting to me is they do not allow average citizens to walk in off the street to address city council. I know this because I tried! Unless you are on their agenda they don't want to hear from you! Every other city council meeting I've been to and I've been to a lot of them they always offer the public a chance to address them even if it's for just 60 seconds.

Citizens of Denver. These are your elected officials who are suppose to represent you! Instead they are giving themselves pay raises.

It's a tough economy but at least people are finally starting to care about what their politicians are doing. When the economy was hot nobody cared or even paid attention because they were getting theirs while the crooks abused the system.

Well if you actually live within the city limits of Denver you might want to let your council know how you feel about this.

These are the people responsible for pissing away your tax dollars.

Not really. We dont want them to have this type of power. But when they abuse their power and slap the middle class across the face like this example or Wisconsin and OHIO people are too freakin lazy to go vote the BUMS OUT.

We have the ultimate power over these idiots

However they are counting us having a short memory and just plain being too lazy to go vote. Unfortunately they are usually correct. But not in my case.................I am involved.

This coming from you is a joke... The NFL paying players millions of dollars does come from US...... US being those that have actully been to a game in our lifetime in the form of high ticket prices, $20-$30 parking, and concession/beer prices and more.

Be thankful you do not live in the city of Bell California.

As with everything else, you get what you pay for. easy to see this in the state legislature. with the exception of a few people like Pat Steadman, the quality of our statehouse reps is very poor, and that has real consequences. The pay in the statehouse is very poor

Not as bad of a problem in Denver City Council b/c they get paid ok to begin with and most of the power lies with the mayor, whose salary is also in line with other mid-major American cities.

statehouse reps are on $30k per year + per diem + benefits, so maybe $50k tops in wages. it is a full time gig these days even though the session is only 120 calendar days per year. Denver City Council is a full time gig, they're on $78k at the moment, plus benefits

I'm crying my eyes out.

Those salaries do not include their benefit packages. Here in Utah they get a raise every year. Now many will say BS but the way it works here is we do not hear about it. They took such crap a few years ago, they now do it on the sly. While state employees have not had a raise in 3 years, they get theirs. Also the health benefit costs to state employees have raised 300% in the past 5 years, their costs have not increased. While they have taken away retirement money from state employees, nothing has happened to theirs and now they are wanting to take away sick leave from state employees while admitting this brings no cost savings, make them AT WILL employees where they can be fired without cause. If only we could do that with them.

And to cover anything they do that is unsavory up they have now presented and passed a bill, all within a 48 hour period without half of the legislators knowing what's in it to stop availability of information of what they do in their dealings in the legislature being available to the public. They can operate in secrecy. Now there are legislators stating they were blackmailed by their own party to vote for it even if they did not know what was in it. Unbelievable. But this is the state of our government officials and what has happened to a state with no bipartisanship, a totalitarian government run by one party. Sad. And embarrassing.

Okay, I'll step off my soapbox. Thanks for the vent.

This is still not on par with that town in california that had the city manager making 300k a year. I believe the average salary in the town is $28k...

State of Colorado is in debt, and its largest city decides the people who run it deserve a pay raise? Southern colorado has ridiculous unemployment...but at least the talking heads in Denver get theirs.
