While the damage is not to be overlooked, it always amazes me how earthquake-proof their buildings are.

The tsunami is worrisome, though.

They have so many earthquakes they are forced to be good.

9.5 is the highest quake ever recorded. (chile). So this is pretty freaking insane.

Man just saw some footage of cars going over a waterfall like dominoes. My Nephew lives in Yokohama and says it's crazy there right now. I guess there is just one quake after another right now.

I know that there is some tension on Okinawa with our bases. Also I think one our politicians over there said some damaging remarks and had to be removed.

I'd say a huge American response to help them as much as we can asap would be a good idea for Obama. Sort of a no brainer, i realize I'm not breaking any watergates with that one. But the Japanese will respect a big effort I think. Maybe we can send those troops on Okinawa into action somehow.

Let's get prepared. I always say that then don't. Then I sort of do but years later I am not prepared again.

So what do we do?

You have a locker or a plastic chest outside in your backyard away from the house. Every 6 months, change the food to keep it as fresh as possible. Put old clothes out in there that you might give to goodwill. Also, buy earthquake insurance.

We have a large number of folks here in Okinawa, but there are bases in Misawa (northern Japan) and Tokyo.

Just woke up to this news... awful. Anyone know if there's a website where loved ones can check in that they're okay? Impossible to reach anyone there at the moment, and I have some friends there.

I had to turn off the TV, it was really disturbing - looked like that opening scene from Hereafter. My colleague is from Tokyo and thankfully all his peeps are OK - 8.9 - what a horrific disaster.

Wow, watching that Tsunami, unbelievable. They say it's hitting Hawaii right now and is expected to have an effect on the West Coast around 9. My heart goes out to the Japanese. Such devastation, just awful.

On the non-humorous, thoughtful side, prayers, energy, and good thoughts go out to folks caught up in the disaster. Did they have any warnings to leave the area beforehand?

They said on the West Coast do not go see this unless you are at least 200 yards away. They've said all military personnel in Japan are accounted for but I have to wonder how they could assess that fast. Just a worried person here for our military.
