"10. John Engelberger (2000) John Engelberger was always willing to work hard. He went from walking on to the Virginia Tech team his freshman year to being a first-team All-Big East player his senior season. It was this type of work ethic that helped him wow scouts at the combine and move up the draft charts. Engelberger was projected to be picked somewhere in the middle of the draft but he boosted his stock in Indianapolis. He ran a 4.73 40, measured a 34-inch vertical, and showed extreme quickness for a defensive lineman in the three-cone drill. Engelberger was rewarded by being selected 35th overall by the San Francisco 49ers. He had a decent career, lasting nine years in the league but only managed 20.5 sacks in 139 games." Yea...that's right. |

He did not get the snazzy plays, but I really thought Engelberger was a very solid addition to the defense.

So, you're saying that watching guys do a bunch of drills isn't the best way to scout? What do you want to do, get out video and watch them play real football?

Any all time great combine list that doesn't have Deon Sanders at #1 sucks.
Though interesting point, Vernon Gholston has been cut by the Jets. He's only 24 and was all Big Ten just three years ago. 6'3", 260. Not a bad candidate for us to pick up as a reclamation project. Have him add 10 pounds and play full time DE instead of making him work in space and some of that talent he showed in college might start peaking through. Could be an worthwhile passing downs backup for Ayers. Hell, get Ayers up in the 275-280 range and on passing downs you could bump him inside if he and Gholston both start breaking through when they're back on the D-line. |

Engelberger also has a room named after him, which is conclusive proof of his studly-ness.
