So yeah I'm headed there on Friday.... should be awesome but wanted to hear some personal experiences and/or must do while I'm in Brazil. Let me know if you've been down there =).

They hand out condoms, or more, throw them out at the festival like they would candy.

I kept one as a souvenir. Used the other. It broke. Always stick with American made Latex.

I've been to Rio twice, but never during Carnival. The place is amazing, and you'll have a blast. But like others have said, keep your head on a swivel and watch out for yourself--the stories about crime, violence, prostitution are not exaggerations. I've personally never had a problem, but on one trip one of my buddies (a big dude--6'-5", 230 lbs) was attacked on Copacabana beach in broad daylight by a group of street punks. He fought them off, but the moral of the story is don't stray too far from your friends and be aware of your surroundings--especially during Carnival...

Not just Americans, Brazil may be the most dangerous society on earth...murder rate is 7 times what it is in the US. Brazil is more violent than Iraq.

It's not all of Brazil, though. The rates of HIV in Brazil are as low or lower as the ones in the US. It's just Rio. Kind of like Atalanta or Washington DC.
