Default DeQuan Bowers Update

Clemson defensive end Da'Quan Bowers, ranked as the top available prospect in Scouts Inc.'s top 32 and projected as a top-five pick in April's draft, plans only to lift at this week's NFL scouting combine, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Bowers, one of the most highly recruited players in his high school class, had a breakout season after the deaths of his father, Dennis, and close friend and mentor Gaines Adams of the Chicago Bears.

Bowers had shed 15 pounds and was performing well in preseason camp in August when his father collapsed while performing in his gospel band. Bowers later was visiting him in the hospital when his father suffered a seizure and died. Bowers spent two weeks away before rejoining the team.

Bowers, wearing Adams' old No. 93, had a sack in nine straight games last season, breaking Adams' record by a game. He also surpassed Adams' record for sacks by a defensive lineman.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bowers had that kind of great season after that much personal tragedy. He's a high character kid too.

I'm liking him more and more as the Broncos pick at #2. He is the #1 player on many draft boards, so the Broncos may not get a shot to take him at 2.

I just get the same feeling with him I got with Maybin and Gholston. I actually want Dareus more than anyone.

The first DB in a decade I couldn't find anything wrong with. Plus, all CBs named Patrick are awesome people.

To be honest, I'm perfectly fine with drafting Peterson, Dareus, Bowers, or Fairly at #2-any of them would instantly improve our defense, and they're all elite talents.

That picture is incredibly badass, though. Unless the D-Linemen can boast pics of themselves that are that cool, its advantage Peterson at this point.

Fairley strikes me as the type that will for every big play he makes end up costing the defense by getting called on an unnecessary roughness call.

i'm all for nasty, but controlled nasty.

I want us to trade down 2-3 spots and get one of Peterson, Daraes, Fairley, or Bowers. One will be available.

All we would need is for the cam Newton hype train to get going, and for another team to want him worse than Buffalo.

NFL Network's Mike Mayock expects North Carolina's Robert Quinn to "challenge" Clemson's Da'Quan Bowers as the draft's No. 1 defensive end.

Quinn "might be most talented football player in this draft," said Mayock. "One of most dominant edge rushers I've ever seen on tape." Mayock also predicts Quinn will run a 4.55 forty at 270 pounds. Quinn's talent has long been considered top-of-the-draft quality, but questions remain about his lackadaisical attitude. His will be one of the most interesting Combine performances.

Auburn QB Cam Newton told SI's Peter King Tuesday that he sees himself "not only as a football player, but an entertainer and icon."
Responding to a question about his limited experience, Newton also tells Yahoo's Dan Wetzel: "Not to sound arrogant, but what I did in one year others couldn't do in their entire collegiate careers." Together, the two quotes may put a screeching halt to Newton's upward momentum. Teams clearly have concerns about Newton's priorities and character as well as his team of handlers. The mentality that fostered entertainment icon LeBron's "Decision" may play in the NBA, but it won't fly with NFL scouts and coaches. If Newton is so dead-set on reaching icon status, he should study the careers of Brian Bosworth and Ryan Leaf. Source: Peter King on Twitter Feb 22, 4:54 PM
