Default Would You Watch?

A news show where people talked just like we all do in our real lives, where political correctness is shelved in many situations and people arent afraid to talk about touchy subjects without getting angry?

I think that this is the next step in media. The company that does this best will corner the market. But then again, the company who accomplishes this cannot be beholden to larger interests. You have to be able to have honesty amongst the people who program and present the show. There has to be somewhat of an insulated environment.

Big interests influence media for specific reasons. On the left you have the DNC and private social engineering wannabes like Soros. On the right you have the RNC and businessmen like Murdoch. If you removed them from the equation and produced news/opinion that is free of those external pressures, it would provide a platform that everyone could watch and not be continually offended. Its kind of ironic...remove political correctness and you have a less offensive product.

Would you watch a news program that cut it to you straight and dumped the politically correct red tape?

I think Byron Allen has a really successful show like that with comedians. I think it is on around 2:30 in the morning. Man Show told it like it is in its day.

There's a show that comes on at 2 am CST called Red Eye that is really close to this idea. Its set up like people having conversations at a bar.

A news show where people presented non-politically correct points of view on touchy subjects without getting angry? That's pure fantasyland.

People live for confrontation & shout downs when it comes to stuff like this now, without it, you'd get little to no ratings.

Yes red eye is pretty much the same but I also put "successful" and 2:30am like honest lawyer. I dont think it will work during peak hours but there is always that chance someone will try it.

If it was not vulgar, then by all means. Political correctness most of the time is stupid and overblown. I would watch.

Meh. Not sure. So many of the shows where opposing viewpoints go at it just end up giving me a headache. Five talking heads, each in a different part of the screen, talking over each other? I'll pass.

But if the show became popular it would have all kinds of external pressure and would thus become just another stupid politics show.

That's what I was thinking. If they don't get angry and just have civil conversation, it's contrived.

I think this is different in that we have a central theme that brings us here and then our political opinions sometimes clash. On a show, they'd surely have different people taking opposing views on everything and cater too much to the audience. It just doesn't seem like it could be authentic. This is probably best left to the comedians or would have to be a side bit on a different show.

Also, who would be the a-holes throwing in comments ("They took our jerbs" in any immigration thread) that really makes this more than people just throwing their opinions at each other?

Not true at all. Maher and his audience may be left, but he has Republicans on the show all the time. He's had at least two on his panal for the majority of his shows this season (along with some Tea Party nutters).

Kinda like NPR?

I think the thing is people want to get their news from people that report things that they agree with.

So you will always get the Extreme Left or the Extreme right sitting and debating sensible like but when you mix the 2 you get a train wreck.

I dont think that your average citizen is as biased as Maher or the NPR people.

I dont isolate myself with only people who agree with me. I imagine that there are alot of people like myself who like to talk about current affairs with people that they like but dont fully agree with and who also can talk about it in person without getting into yelling matches.

Maher, Maddow, Olbermann, Beck, Hannity, and some of the far left shows on NBC/ABC/CBS/MSNBC dont get the ratings that Bill O'Reilly gets, who is a sort of centrist compared to the others I mentioned.

O'Reilly gets the ratings he gets because he's combative and his show always has that outside chance of a possible shouting match. Like Morton Downey Jr. back in the day, a segment of the population looks for the "talk wrestling" style that he provides. There's really not much of a gap between O'Reilly and overt sensationalists like Steve Wilkos.

Bottom line, people want the yelling matches these days. If you put out a show like say William F. Buckley used to do back in the day, it'll fail because people by and large will be bored by talk without action

I never understood the appeal of the Downey show, there were helpdesk techs at my 1st job who got in fights over his topics. Most of which were hoxes anyway.

Weird, I got exactly the opposite when I watched it (back when it was on ABC latenight, we don't have HBO), they would always shout down whoever's views weren't politically correct, maybe it's changed since then?

Anyways, on the OP, Red Eye is good, but it's time slot is horrendous. The only time I watched it was when I was up sick all night. I don't like opinion shows enough to DVR them.
