Default Report: Denver close to hiring Mora

The Denver Post is reporting that the Broncos are close to hiring former Atlanta and Seattle coach Jim L. Mora as defensive coordinator.

If Mora gets the job, he’ll be Denver’s sixth defensive coordinator in six seasons. Denver should improve defensively under the guidance of Mora and new head coach John Fox, a defensive specialist. Denver was last in the NFL in total defense and points allowed in 2010. PER ESPN

This is the news SoCal has been waiting for

Holmes scores 4 TDs, sprains ankle

http://espn.go.com/nfl/recap?gameId=241024012

Quote:
Holmes' four TDs rushing in a half tied the NFL record and also broke the record for most in a game against the Falcons.

"I am honored to be a part of history," Atlanta coach Jim Mora said sarcastically. "We have done a tremendous job of stopping the run. So it just emphasized how well they played. Their O-line was doing such an excellent, tremendous job, it might not have mattered who was in there."

The Chiefs' historic day began, oddly enough, with Holmes losing a fumble on their first play from scrimmage.

"In a game like that, you just want to keep running the ball," said Waters. "For an offensive lineman, that's a lovely day. That's a dream."

The collapse of the defense, which had been given great credit for Atlanta's 5-1 start, was nearly complete. They came in with 20 sacks but hardly even got a hand on Trent Green, who had 269 yards passing on 20 completions.
"The red light started going off," said Atlanta tackle Ed Jasper. "They were literally the best running team we've played against. They took it to us."

Not as recent as, say, the Broncos' last playoff win, but Mora Jr.'s last playoff win was certainly more recent than the Chiefs'.

Mora might work well with Fox. I am glad they are going for fundamentals and returning to solid basics. My concern is will management listen to younger coaches that they will need to have on staff. A young Rex Ryan on staff might be seen as brash but we need that contrast.

Does anyone find it suspect that Denver cannot hire a key coach with any potential?

I mean I think it's a good thing Denver is hiring experienced personel for stability... but I really don't see any long term continuity with this staff, because lets be real for a second... Broncos aren't going to SB with McCoy and Mora as OC and DC.

However, Mora has always allowed no more than 21.x PPG and no less than 20.5 PPG with his defenses outside of his recent stint with the Seahawks... which is pretty much the NFL average.

Why do you think hiring guys like McCoy and Mora do not bring long term continuity?

FFS,

This is not Mora's defense.

It is John Fox's defense.

Because we probably won't get to the super bowl either as OC/DC.

When I say continuity, it doesn't mean I don't think they can be here for more than 2-3 seasons.

I'm talking about the long run for 5+ years.

I mean McCoy might have potential but he didn't exactly do the greatest job with Orton or Tebow when he got the chance at the end of the season... however I think it's fair to give him more than those games.

McCoy has never been part of any great offense in his coaching career, as matter of fact he's been part of some of the worst.

The best were with the Broncos and once in 2008. Hopefully he learned something from McDaniels but I highly doubt less than 2 years is enough to call him a disciple.

I mean he has an opportunity here... but I dont' think many people are high on him.

Fox doesn't call plays. He's a managing HC who oversees everything... he and Mora will probably work together in terms of philosophy and all that, but anytime you hire an ex-HC as your coord. you better bet he'll want to do as many things as he can possibly can HIS way...

if people weren't high on McCoy, there wouldn't have been 4 teams after him as the OC....

Good. He coaches defense, and I want that guy to be a prick. Defense should have attitute...I'm tired of the soft, pudgy, old guys we've had here. Nolan was the only one the break the mold and the only one to do really well before McFail ran him off.

Yeah, you see that a lot around the league now. Former HCs trying their hardest to upset things by trying to get their way.

Or not.

Really? I thought he was totally justified given that one of the questions was, "how should they feel?"

I like the hire. The players need coaches with experience. Jim Mora was hired by 2 NFL Franchises to be their Head Football Coach. He was offered a 3rd job by the Redskins and turned it down to stay in Seattle. He's been highly recruited as a DC in this league. Sure, his defenses have only been average...but, have they had better than average talent. Because, with the scrubs we have...I'd gladly be average...instead of the worst in the league.

As for McCoy, I thought he did a really good job the last 4 games of the season. I consider the Cardinals game a scratch...it came right after their head coach was fired and both players and coaches alike were wondering about their immediate futures. There was bound to be a let down.

McCoy gave Tebow what he thought he could handle without hanging him out to dry. Each week he fed him a little bit more. The result...most fans are high on Tebow's potential. I'd say that's a big accomplishment for McCoy who did so on the fly!
