Cowherd's bogus stat - The Orange Mane

Seeing that a lot of folks hate Collin Cowherd I thought I'd share this funny story from his show today.

I think it's Cowherd that says don't out think the room, or something like that. Well he surely did today.

He mentioned that in a book that Bill Walsh wrote, Walsh stated that explosive plays (plays over 20 yards) make a huge difference. That teams with 2 explosive plays a game win at a very high percentage of the time. I think he said like 85% of the time.

To me that statement didn't seem to make much sense. What if the team's defense sucks and gives up explosive plays? What if those explosive plays lead to FGs and not TDs? And all it takes is two plays of over 20 yards to win a game? That doesn't sound right.

Well anyway, Cowherd looked up the numbers, and stated that the playoff teams are like a combined 25-5, or something like that, when they have two or more explosive plays in a game. He stated that the Patriots are 6-0 when they have two or more explosive plays. Well, that doesn't doesn't seem to mean much. Seeing that the Pats are 14-2, you can throw out a lot of stats and they'll have a winning record when that happens. Cowherd didn't bother looking at teams with losing records. So the numbers that he threw out there didn't really prove the theory true.

So Mark Schlereth and Trey Wingo came on, and Cowherd started going on and on about why he loves the Steelers. Because the Steelers had 77 explosive plays while only giving up 40, for a +37. Then Cowherd says that the next best playoff team was the Pats, at a +2, then the Jets, at a +1, and everybody else was in the negative. Cowherd, without realizing it, destroyed his own theory.

So Schlereth was like, "Wait a minute, if all those other teams are in the negative, how did they make the playoffs?"

Then Wingo jumps in and yells out "Bogus stat!". Then Schlereth was like, "Yeah, that's a bogus stat!"

Cowherd sounded all embarrassed, and like a 13 year old wimpy kid he was like "It's not a bogus stat."

Cowherd quickly changed the subject and didn't bring up the explosive plays theory for the rest of that segment.

I use to hate skip bayless but over the past month or two i have found that i agree with him a lot on some topics especially about Tebow

I wonder what the talking heads at ESPN are saying about the Broncos hiring Fox... I'm sure they'll find a way to make the Broncos look like idiots...

I had to look this guy up. He's on radio. Hiw many of you people still listen to radio? It's terrible. I can't believe you even listen to this guy's opinion.

Skip Bayless was hired to be the contradictory voice on every show he's on. You know that, correct? He takes the most indefensible side of an argument (though I haven't heard him talk about Tebow in some time, so I'm not sure what he's b****ing about these days) and battles it to the teeth.

If you want a really good read, check out God Save the Fan by Will Leitch. Excellent book, quick read, and gives a ton of insight into tWWL.

Well the music stations suck really bad, so I started listening to talk radio years ago. I usually only listen in the car, but sometimes will listen as I'm working on my computer.

Skip is a Tebow supporter.. but I haven't figured out if it's because he is smart or just lucky in this case. He seems to support anyone that wins.. no matter what. He is high on cam Newton too and I think Cam is a monumental bust waiting to happen.

I think Cam was just very fortunate to have a great running game around him and line that fueled his passing game - perfect storm. Florida let Cam go because he could not run their pass heavy offense like Tebow could AND Cam couldn't even carry the run game like Tebow had to. Cam's height is a liability as a runner. Tebow was an elite passer and the primary runner for his team.

Skip also underrates Tebow's running ability.. but he is right in the sense that Tebow is a better passer than a runner but people don't understand how good he is as a passer.

I think youre right but Skip has been a Tebow supporter for sometime now just two days ago I was listening to him talk about how if a coach doesn't want to come in and coach Tebow they don't deserve to be an NFL coach because he is the exact type of player you would like on your team.
