This looks like fun:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40329269...s-asiapacific/ I was listening to the radio this AM, some Korean expert in Pusan. He says this it the worst skirmish since the end of the Korean War. Having spent some time on the DMZ in Korea, I doubt my old pals in the infantry on hilltops Oullette and Collier are feeling too comfortable right now. I remember our general once told us, "If the North attacks, we will suffer over 90% casualties. The rest will be on stateside leave." Not a pretty picture. If the Koreas start going at it seriously, I don't see any way the U.S. stays out of it. We're not going to stand by while the North obliterates Seoul. Not to mention Camp Casey and our troops North of the Imjin River. |

I am scheduled to fly to Seoul for business on Dec 4th. I am seriously rethinking now. Is there anyone here familiar with the area that would have any idea how serious this is?

I figure we'll know how far this is going by this weekend. This is the worst clash they've had since the war, over 60 years. Definitely some serious ****. If there is a high civilian casualty count from the North's artillery strike, I'm thinking the people of the South will demand a counter attack.

Agreed. Some of the reports seem to say this is a lot of blustering, and both have too much to lose to escalate into full scale war... but who really knows. I'll be watching closely the next few weeks

Doesn't look good, Chinese torpedo downs South Korean ship in the yellow sea killing 46 in March, now this. Guess the North and South are having a territory dispute over who owns the island where the the incident occurred.
Anyone heard anything from China? Last edited by Obushma; 11-23-2010 at 09:31 AM.. |

It is significantly more serious than past skirmishes. I'd like to think it would be a kick in the butt for China, who is North Korea's sole outlet to the world, but it probably wont be. South Korea can't react militarily because war would be a total disaster politically, militarily and of course, economically.

Given that Seoul could be leveled in the first day of conflict, the answer is quite awhile. I have a hard time believing South Korea will do anything until the U.S. gives them some sort of greenlight and with us being knee deep in the Middle-East and South Asia that seems unlikely to happen anytime soon.

My grandfather got a purple heart and a lifetime of alcoholism liberating those people.
Its time for Obama to grow a pair and start dictating terms to that dying clown. He has already been run over by Iran. |

The world isn't black and white my friend, there are shades of gray. If you are wanting us to "man up" and counter attack, then I hope you are ok with millions of people losing their life in Asia from a Nuke, b/c North Korea will launch one, they don't give a ****. Things are much more complicated than "manning up" The world is so simple when you look through the intellect of a child like Palin. Man up indeed. |

North Korea is a strong business partner for China and their economic relationship has only grown stronger these past years. China would not back up North Korea in a war, but at the same time it wouldn't necessarily stop it either.

China is kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place. On the one hand, they probably aren't wild about the idea of a U.S. influenced, united Korea on their border, but on the other hand, North Korea is bat **** crazy. Who knows? They might be at the point where they would prefer a peaceful, united Korea as a trading partner. After all, North Korea as it stands right now is a drag on China. They can't feed themselves. Their totalitarian business model is pathetic. They are basically a Chinese welfare state.
