Default Woody's Mailbag: why Todd Haley is such a jerk.

Woody's Mailbag: Not many kind words for Chiefs' coach Haley

Donnie from Virginia asks Woody why Todd Haley is such a jerk.

Posted: 11/18/2010 01:00:00 AM MST

Why is Todd Haley such a jerk? He routs Denver in Denver, keeps his starters in until 3 minutes left in the game and has a problem with Josh McDaniels doing the same thing? Go back to intramurals, brother!

-- Donnie, Richmond, Va.

Donnie: Honestly, Todd Haley was a jerk, you might recall, in previous stops in the NFL, getting into it with his own players and other assistants during games. He's a hothead. I'm not surprised by his actions on Sunday, but I respect his right to avoid the handshake, one of the most stupid traditions in all of sports.

Baseball managers, NBA coaches and NHL coaches don't shake hands after games. Coaches in the NFL generally don't want to do it. You may remember that Josh McDaniels, more or less, dismissed his former New England boss after the Broncos beat the Patriots last year, and Bill Belichick rarely is gracious after games with other coaches.

Why not just eliminate the postgame shake? Haley did apologize promptly the next day. He thought the Broncos were running up the score. So what if they were? Last year the Broncos scored 44 in Kansas City, and then K.C. scored 44 in Denver. Big deal.

It was one of only two games the Broncos played extremely well all season, and they had the right to keep their players in, although getting Tim Tebow or Brady Quinn a little time in the fourth quarter might have been a good idea. Actually, McDaniels could have gotten Kyle Orton over the 300-yard mark in passing if he had wanted to.

If I had been Haley, I would have used this game to inspire my players for the rematch in Arrowhead Stadium. And he has enough problems of his own these days without worrying about what the Broncos did. But, again, if he wants to

shake a finger instead of McDaniels' hand, let it be.

Maybe those people who don't like McDaniels' attitude all the time will see that Haley's attitude isn't so sweet.

I actually think getting rid of the handshake is a good idea. When the NFL wasn't such a circus, I think the coaches going to midfield to shake hands and exchange words was nice. It was private and personal.

Nowadays, you have a throng of paparazzi surrounding the meeting, shoving mics and cameras and lights in their faces, trying to get sound bites they can hype up later. It isn't private or personal any more...it's a show, a useless relic from an older version of the game, much like the extra point.

If you don't want to shake hands after a game, go coach basketball.

Yeah, let's ditch the handshake. Afterall, it's about the only nod towards good sportsmanship left in the NFL. Who needs archaic ideas like that anymore?

Ah facts Woody, they continue to allude you. They had agreed to avoid the handshake after the game, well before the game, given the ridiculous amount of attention Belichick and his assistants get when doing it and spoke in the locker room, in private, after the game.

The handshake is not just NFL tradition, it's football tradition (college, too).

I say we keep it.

whether it's tradition or not...when a man reaches out to shake your hand and you decline you are being a prick about it for some reason

there's a lot of people I dislike in the world but if they extended a hand, I'd shake it

Shanny told me he would get some game smegum out the crack of his ass on his right hand before he shook hands with any Raiders coach. He told me he used to watch them walk away and at some point smell their hand and snap there head away for their hand, that's when Shanny would laugh his ass off.

No,you just have to start the thread with a title that's no more than 3 characters and then go in and edit it.

You should try again

No...There's just a hiccup with the software. You have to make the original title 4 letters or less, post as usual, and then edit the title to whatever you want after it hits the main page.

Getting rid of the handshake: Stupid idea imo.

It's show sportmanship and graciousness in victory and defeat.
