Default Jets institute body language fines for quarterback Mark Sanchez

Mark Sanchez's(notes) negative body language is going to cost him some money. New York Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer announced Thursday that the team would be issuing light fines to the quarterback every time he slumped his shoulders, put down his head or trudged off the field during practice.

As reported by The Star-Ledger, the whole, light-hearted system was created by Sanchez himself, who has made it his goal this season to eliminate the bad body language that was so prevalent during his rookie campaign. Had the fines been in effect then, Schottenheimer says the quarterback would have gone broke.

Backup quarterback Mark Brunell(notes) collects the small fines (Schottenheimer wouldn't say how much Sanchez pays, lest it cause a "salary cap infraction"), which can come from any number of actions. On Thursday, for instance, Schottenheimer said Sanchez screwed up a play but gave a look that suggested somebody else was at fault. "That's a fine," Schottenheimer announced to reporters.

Fines will only be given for violations in practice.

This is how you develope a solid leader! Not just allowing the player to be rough around the edges. I so wished Shanny would have been tougher on Cutler and not continued the trend of letting him slide due to his skills and arm.

Sanchez is full of fail. They can fine him all they want, but he's got the mentality of a Girl Scout in a world class athlete's body. He doesn't have the chops to play quarterback in the NFL.

If they had a friendly little system in place between the guys, I think that's fine. Whatever, it's cool to be able to make fun of yourself.

But annoucing it like this blows the whole thing up, makes it a story...now Sanchez is going to have to deal with 'body language' questions from every reporter for the next few seasons.

"Are you becoming a better leader now Mark? I saw you hang your head after that INT in the first quarter..."

Lame.

Wonder how much beer money would be lost by Jay "Frown Cannon" Cutler?
As for Sanchez, light hearted fun but a serious problem to what the teammates see on the field.

What, like Matt Leinart?

I dunno what Sanchez you're watching, but he seems pretty damn good to me. He's started every game since he was drafted, at the toughest position in football, in the most pressure-filled fishbowl in sports.

I'm with Chris, that's too dumb to believe. Sounds like The Onion.

If that's going to make him a better QB then I think is a good idea.
Relaying that message to your QB about what body language means and how it will hurt his leadership on the field is a great steps towards improving the way others see you.
I think that's the meassage everybody here is missing...

I never learned what that phrase means, though I'm pretty sure it's something dirty.

Care to enlighten me?
