Default RIP Sparky ...

Sparky Anderson placed in hospice care
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5759008

I've met Sparky a few time when i was a child and can't think of many people as big as deal as he was at that time who acted as normal as can be and loved everyone as much Sparky does...

I echo that sentiment. I had the chance to chat with this man in a hotel lobby for about 5 minutes alone and he was very endearing as so many from his generation are. To listen to him talk about baseball--not even my favorite sport, by a long shot--was a real treat.

Had a chance to meet him and a lot of players from the BRM before a World Series game at Riverfront that my grandpa took me to when I was really young. Pretty impressionable moment to a guy playing Little League.

Years later I always loved seeing the sign on the 134 in Thousand Oaks announcing it as the home of Sparky Anderson.

Keep fighting Sparky.

Dementia sucks! My grandmother of 89 years has had it for at least 12 years and it sucks that she lost her charm and who in the hell anybody is the last 20 years almost. Sparky always had that non professional way of speaking (like doing Angels games in the 90s) that you either loved or hate. Good luck to him but I dont think you ever improve from it.

Ditto w/all of the above - I grew up north of Cincinnatti in the '70's, met Sparky once when I was 11 or 12 - little league age - and of course he took the time to talk to me like I mattered for several minutes.. Got Pete Rose and Lou Brock to sign my ball.

Helluva guy.

Helluva Manager.

A great manager at a great time in Baseball history!

But I cannot believe he was only 76. Man, he looked like he was 60, back in 1975. He was the oldest looking 41 year old dude ever in 1975. I cannot believe he was only 41 then, he looked so much older.

I will always remember his 1984 Detroit Tigers squad.

Between Ernie Harwell and Sparky, the Tigers have lost 2 legends this year.

RIP Sparky, he was a big part of the community here in Thousand Oaks. He has a golf tournament that helps the CLU Baseball team annually and of course he helped build the CLU baseball field as it is rightfully named after him.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who made that observation. I would have easily put Sparky in his upper 80s, by now. Regardless, RIP to a baseball legend...

I think he was one of the most recognizable sports figure from that era. Haven't paid much attention to baseball for years but saw his pic today and immediately knew it was Sparky. I remember even rooting for the Reds because he was such a media figure and he had coached my Detroit Tigers. RIP Sparky

I got to see them twice that year at Comisky Park that was a team you had to admire even if you were a rival. I remember leaving the park the 2nd time thinking that was one great squad.

Ditto from a Lansing native and lifelong Tigers fan. Tough year to be a Tigers fan.

I'll always remember how excruciating it was to watch him manage an AL team with an NL style sometimes, but the wins said it all.

RIP Sparky.
