Eight False Things the Public "Knows" Prior to Election Day
Friday 22 October 2010 by: Dave Johnson | Campaign for America's Future | Report There are a number of things the public "knows" as we head into the election that are just false. If people elect leaders based on false information, the things those leaders do in office will not be what the public expects or needs. Here are eight of the biggest myths that are out there: 1) President Obama tripled the deficit. Reality: Bush's last budget had a $1.416 trillion deficit. Obama's first budget reduced that to $1.29 trillion. 2) President Obama raised taxes, which hurt the economy. Reality: Obama cut taxes. 40% of the "stimulus" was wasted on tax cuts which only create debt, which is why it was so much less effective than it could have been. 3) President Obama bailed out the banks. Reality: While many people conflate the "stimulus" with the bank bailouts, the bank bailouts were requested by President Bush and his Treasury Secretary, former Goldman Sachs CEO Henry Paulson. (Paulson also wanted the bailouts to be "non-reviewable by any court or any agency.") The bailouts passed and began before the 2008 election of President Obama. 4) The stimulus didn't work. Reality: The stimulus worked, but was not enough. In fact, according to the Congressional Budget Office, the stimulus raised employment by between 1.4 million and 3.3 million jobs. 5) Businesses will hire if they get tax cuts. Reality: A business hires the right number of employees to meet demand. Having extra cash does not cause a business to hire, but a business that has a demand for what it does will find the money to hire. Businesses want customers, not tax cuts. 6) Health care reform costs $1 trillion. Reality: The health care reform reduces government deficits by $138 billion. 7) Social Security is a Ponzi scheme, is "going broke," people live longer, fewer workers per retiree, etc. Reality: Social Security has run a surplus since it began, has a trust fund in the trillions, is completely sound for at least 25 more years and cannot legally borrow so cannot contribute to the deficit (compare that to the military budget!) Life expectancy is only longer because fewer babies die; people who reach 65 live about the same number of years as they used to. 8) Government spending takes money out of the economy. Reality: Government is We, the People and the money it spends is on We, the People. Many people do not know that it is government that builds the roads, airports, ports, courts, schools and other things that are the soil in which business thrives. Many people think that all government spending is on "welfare" and "foreign aid" when that is only a small part of the government's budget. This stuff really matters. If the public votes in a new Congress because a majority of voters think this one tripled the deficit, and as a result the new people follow the policies that actually tripled the deficit, the country could go broke. If the public votes in a new Congress that rejects the idea of helping to create demand in the economy because they think it didn't work, then the new Congress could do things that cause a depression. If the public votes in a new Congress because they think the health care reform will increase the deficit when it is actually projected to reduce the deficit, then the new Congress could repeal health care reform and thereby make the deficit worse. And on it goes. All republished content that appears on Truthout has been obtained by permission or license. |

At no time during the Obama Administration has the tax rate changed in any significant manner. Good thing his seat his not up for re-election.

I'm the one who researched the article and posted the information, moron.
You might want to look at it for yourself doofus. If you did, you would see this: "Dave is a frequent public speaker and talk-radio guest and a leading participant in the progressive blogging community. He does a regular weekly segment on the popular Fairness Doctrine radio show. A featured contributor at Huffington Post, his work also appears at many other sites including Open Left, AlterNet, MyDD and Common Dreams. " I guess that you are so depraved and desperate at this point that you have nothing left but personal attacks. Last edited by epicSocialism4tw; 10-25-2010 at 05:16 PM.. |

America has one of the worst electorates (as far as being informed or even caring) out of any of the industrialized or developed nations in the world. I was talking with a staffer in Minnesota who is heading one of the campaigns in the area and he happened to mention several of the things outlined in the original post, as well as this development:
~ 95% of the population is going to have their taxes cut under the Obama Administration (an absolute fact), yet only 8% of people are actually aware of this number. Not really surprising, but still shocking that such a low percentage of our population are cognizant of something so essential. Furthermore, it isn't surprising that McSkillet and the like try and "debunk" the statements made by attacking the group/messenger of the information, rather than being able to articulate against the claims themselves. Hehe. |

Ha ha ha! ![]() There you go with your same old "attack the messenger" stupidity again. You didn't challenge a single factual assertion in the article. |

You're also the same moron who posts propaganda here, so I dont think anyone would count on you to provide them with direction to anything resembling a fact or a truth. You're more like a an annoying, chirping troll. Everything I posted was factual. Yet you continue to propagandize this forum. |

![]() Apparently you believe that all inconvenient truths and facts will go away if you just hurl enough epithets at them. I hope for your sake you never decide to pursue a college education - you'll be in for quite a shock when you realize that actual arguments supported by facts and logic are expected of you. |

They know you only show up during election seasons and when potentially damaging issues to liberals pop up. They know that you post the same old same old propaganda over and over ad infinitum: cartoons and links to extreme far left bloggers/propaganda sites. Its a matter of character as to whether or not they call you out on it. |

He did, it was in biology. Though, he hasn't been able to come up with an argument for age of earth estimation. My guess is that he lost his James Ussher handbook while attempting to baptize himself in the Rio Grande.

Really?
You took a poll? Or do you have some other evidence that shows "most of them" share your nutty perceptions? Yawn! Do you have any other "debate" tactic besides dismissing all of your opponents' arguments as "propaganda" without actually refuting them? You are the poster boy for intellectual dishonesty and pathological denial. |
