I researched the stat that 32 players never again saw an nfl roster from the roster McDaniels started with. Here is what I found.

The count that I got is 36 players that played in the NFL after the Broncos or are still with the Broncos. I only have 29 players on the list that hasn't played again. I'm not sure who is missing but I don't doubt the 32 number. I couldn't find very good sources since we had so many injuries that year. Some players don't show and some are different than nfl.com, like Cecil Sapp. http://www.nfl.com/players/cecilsapp...e?id=SAP597435

None of this really means much because roster turnover happens. This is especially true with the kind of scheme changes we saw on both sides of the ball. I am just countering claims like this, http://www.orangemane.com/BB/showpos...1&postcount=21, and getting Shanahans back a little. There are only 18 cut from a 53 man roster, that never played again, if that 36 number is correct. That team just had a ton of injuries and a few guys that were probably cut early in the season.

Thanks. The guys at the bottom of both lists need checked. Some didn't come up on nfl.com player search right away and I just put them in the didn't play again category. I'll edit.

I'm sure Shanahan appreciates you getting his back. Can't let anyone slander that stacked '08 defense, can we now?

Also, the real problem with what McDaniels had to deal with when he came here is poorly expressed when viewed as an aggregate number. The real dilemma was that upon taking over this team McDaniels was left with only three NFL quality starters on defense, with many of the previous year's starters not even catching a cup of coffee in the NFL again and even more never getting a chance to start again.

That same problem propagated through to the special teams where we had serious questions at both parts of the kicking game (Prater looked absolutely awful that year) and the coverage/returns teams were fighting to be league worst.

Since that time we've seen the defense and special teams rebuilt to a solidly league average for both with the depth being composed of young talent as opposed to the many retreads Shanahan used to run through for backups.

Shanahan is a great coach, easily the greatest in Broncos history. He is the second best thing to happen to the Broncos (after Elway obviously, though for me personally TD comes in at a close third). But the tail end of his tenure here was not something fans should even try to defend. He didn't get the job done, primarily by never showing consistent commitment to defense. It is what it is. He got complacent and Bowlen made the right choice in moving on when that became apparent.

I'm surprised Darrell Jackson and Ekuban never got another shot. Ekuban was decent for us and Jackson was only a couple years removed from the pro bowl.

Anthony Alridge? Seriously? He's not on a team now nor has he ever recorded an NFL stat.

It's not a very accurate list to be honest...Vernon Fox came back to the Broncos in 09 and helped play some ST... you'd know if you watched the Broncos...BUT...

The 3 players I listed above are not in the NFL right now and that's all that matters.

29+3=32.
