Default Dunta Robinson fined $50,000 for hit on Desean Jackson; James Harrison fined $75,000 for 2 hits

Ray Anderson, the NFL's executive vice president of football operations, said Tuesday morning that harsher fines and possible suspensions for flagrant hits could be coming.

The league wasted no time, as Tuesday afternoon it fined Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison $75,000, and New England Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather and Atlanta Falcons cornerback Dunta Robinson $50,000 apiece for helmet-to-helmet hits they delivered in games Sunday.

"Future offenses will result in an escalation of fines up to and including suspension," Anderson said in a letter to each player.

Harrison is considered a repeat offender. He was previously fined $5,000 for unnecessary roughness against Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young in a Sept. 19 game.

Harrison sidelined two Cleveland Browns wide receivers Sunday with head injuries after jarring hits. An NFL spokesman said one of the tackles, on Joshua Cribbs, was legal. The Browns were more upset about Harrison's hit on Mohamed Massaquoi, which the league reviewed.

After the Steelers' 28-10 victory, Harrison stated matter-of-factly that his intention is to hurt opposing players who roam near him.

"I don't want to injure anybody," Harrison said. "There's a big difference between being hurt and being injured. You get hurt, you shake it off and come back the next series or the next game. I try to hurt people."

Meriweather was fined for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Baltimore Ravens tight end Todd Heap during the Patriots' overtime victory.

Heap lay on the ground for several minutes, left the game, then returned before halftime. It was "one of those hits that shouldn't happen," Heap said.

Anderson was asked specifically about that hit during a radio show Tuesday morning.

"That in our view is something that was flagrant, it was egregious," Anderson said. "And effective immediately, that's going to be looked at a very aggressive level, which could include suspension without pay."

Robinson and Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson were knocked out of their game after brutal collision in which the Falcons cornerback launched himself head first to make a tackle. Both players sustained concussions.

Add a suspension for old Harrison. He's earned it.

I don't know about the Dunta hit. I mean it was a devastating hit but that rule hasn't been put in place yet. He went straight into his shoulder too...

Pisses me off he never gets flagged. His hit on Massaquoi was blatant and brutal. I don't know why the referees wouldn't flag him for it.

So did I. He led with his shoulder. It could be that the NFL fined him for hitting him too hard. His helmet slams into Jacksons shoulder.

Like I said in the other thread; The defense has to let the receivers catch the ball anymore. Catch touch them before hte ball gets there and can't hit them when it gets there. It has to be afterwards.

Yeah, I thought Robinson's hit was legal.

That was more shoulder + side of helmet rather than leading with the helmet.

Egregious missile shots to the head are not good, but ya...I'm not sure I care for watching linebackers diving at the ankles of receivers going across the middle. It's a privilege to play in the league, and I'd say their salaries more than make up for the risk of injury. Pretty soon they're gonna have a faircatch-halo around every offensive player that lasts for 5 steps or a football move. ****ing bull****.

Nope. He was not defenceless, helmet to helmet is legal.

Dunta's hit was illegal because it was on a defenseless player, and he launched himself, not because it was helmet to helmet.

Harrison is just a total POS, and is more than deserving of any suspension coming his way.

I wonder what would happen even Royal stayed down on this hit...

So, by rule, this is illegal too correct? That defenseless **** is BS IMO, I mean WR's get hit ALL the time when they're defenseless.

League is selling photo of James Harrison's illegal hit

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...s-illegal-hit/

Posted by Mike Florio on October 19, 2010 11:12 PM ET

The folks at KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh have uncovered an interesting angle regarding the hit that resulted in the imposition of a $75,000 fine against Steelers linebacker James Harrison.

The league currently is selling photos of the incident involving Harrison and Browns receiver Mohamed Massaquoi, at anywhere from $15.95 to $249.95.

Sorry, but the NFL can't have it both ways. If the league wants to legislate dirty hits out of the game, the NFL should do nothing to profit from those dirty hits.

For now, the NFL is.

UPDATE: It appears that the spike in traffic from PFT Planet has crashed the servers of the NFL Photo Store.
