As Toledo Public Schools teacher Amanda VanNess stood in the Oval Office and watched President Obama sign an education stimulus bill, she already knew she'd lost her teaching job back home to budget cuts and low seniority.
The $26 billion stimulus bill, designed to save 160,000 teacher and other government jobs across the nation, couldn't save her position at Pickett Elementary. http://www.toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs...EWS04/10140328 |

Just bad political planning on Obama's team. Generally, you don't like these photo ops to be able to come back and bite you on the butt. But I agree that it's not that big a deal. It's not like generally favoring the increase and then having a cabinet full of people who have back taxes that they're trying to get out of paying still on the books.

The stimulus just put our children further into debt and delayed the inevitable.

another problem outside of the union is that too many teachers have multiple subject credentials instead of a single subject needed to teach at the HS math level, science level etc etc.
If you have your single subject credential in math, biology, chemistry you will be working if you want to. If you wanted to teach 3rd grade and have same kids all day probably going to be tough. The market flooded for those kinds of teachers. There only hope is to reduce class size. But there isnt enough money to do that. So they are screwed. Give vouchers, let schools go private. |

Obama hasn't helped his dems in this election at all. Unless he fires up the blacks, and fast, they won't do well.
I think losing the independents a forgone conclusion so at this point its all about turnout. |

If they got rid of the Dept. of Education, public education would magically improve.

Maybe if the repugs wouldn't of opposed this bill like everything else it would have passed sooner. Repugs like to keep b****ing about the unemployment rate and them oppose anything that tries to save jobs.Hell even Mark Zandi,an economist and former adviser to McCain supported this.

Im trying to figure out how a party that controls procedures, schedules votes and controls committees bills come from and has large majorities in both the house and senate can blame the minority party for holding things up. Also...how do you "save" a job? How do you quantify it? What exactly is the cost benefit to saving this job? Seems ingenious to pump money to the states then claim because they didnt cut jobs or programs they need to cut to stay within budget equals saving a job. What happens if it gets cut in the next budget? Is it really a saved job if federal funds stop coming in? Wouldnt it make sense for the state to make the adjustment it needs to actually support the proposed budgets rather than raise taxes or go to the feds hat in hand asking for a favor to cover the shortfall? And McCain is about as conservative as Obama is. ![]() ![]() |

The real issue that most are missing is the major budget gaps that local school are facing. Since local property taxes are the main source of funding for schools, we are facing tough times until the housing market stabilize. In many ways there is negative feed back in the system that is really hurting the economy, and won't be solved by cutting taxes.

You're wrong about taxes. Cutting taxes obviously helps individuals take care of their expenses. It literally inspires confidence in moving forward. Those tax dollars might be a down payment on a house. Obama instead wants to raise taxes significantly on each individual, and in turn to contract their discretionary income. Obamacare literally taxes each person over $4000 per year, a cost that could potentially prevent individuals from putting down payments on houses. Implementing a 4K tax during a recession is a huge mistake. |
