Default Analysis: Don't expect Broncos to shuffle against Manning

Analysis: Don't expect Broncos to shuffle against Manning

Rolling through the video from the Broncos' win over the Seahawks last Sunday, you see the Broncos use their base defense, their nickel package (five defensive backs), their dime package (six defensive backs) and a short-yardage package.

Players ran onto the field, others ran off after almost every snap as defensive coordinator Don Martindale tried to get the matchups he wanted.

Well, that's not happening this weekend.

Consider it just another item, on a long list of concerns, a team has to deal with when it faces Peyton Manning. Because the Colts usually run their no-huddle offense at such a high tempo, it doesn't allow time for a defense to run in different players in the secondary or rotate defensive linemen.

Much of the time Manning simply makes defenses live with the players they lined up with on the first play of a drive.

"That's something you have to work on," Martindale said. "You definitely have to plan for that when you play Peyton Manning, because he's so good at what he does, the stress level goes up in every situation. It's almost like hurry up and get in the locker room for halftime, because he's going to hurry up and come out after halftime."

Last Sunday night was just another example.

The Giants often matched the Colts' offensive personnel with their dime look. That left a New York safety down inside the formation, lined up where an inside linebacker would normally be.

The Giants also had three defensive ends and just one defensive tackle in their front four.

Manning saw this and repeatedly checked to one running play after another. And the Colts had one big gain after another on the way to 160 yards rushing in what was a rout.

The Colts consistently had a guard blocking an over-matched safety, and they easily moved an undersized Giants defensive front out of the way.

They also moved so fast in their no-huddle look that the Giants couldn't fix it. They couldn't run a linebacker or another defensive lineman onto the field because they didn't have time. They had to wait until an incomplete pass or a stoppage in play.

At one point in the fourth quarter, Manning saw the Giants trying to sub out defensive personnel on a third-and-15 play and got the Colts lined up and snapped the ball. New York was quickly flagged for 12 men on the field.

That's a challenge for the Broncos since they like to have players such as nose tackle Jamal Williams in on early downs and take him off for second-and-long and various third-down plays. They like to play the nickel, dime and base, sometimes in the same series.

But the Colts won't let them. So the choices Martindale makes to open drives are often going to be the choices the Broncos have to live with until the Colts have either scored or punted.

I kind of feel like a kid again watching the Broncos right now. I have ideas on how Josh might approach a game plan, but it's like a present each week watching the game plan unfold. This game, in particular, gives me those "christmas tingles." I am very anxious to see how Josh prepares the team for Peyton Manning.

I'm mostly just worried to be honest.

Our nickel D has struggled against the run, we really need to step it up and show we can stop their running game without having to send out our base defense more often than not. We have to defend the run respectably with our nickel D or we're in real trouble.

On offense I'd agree with you, I think it's going to be very interesting to see what Josh does in this one. Our run game has been very poor so far, and as much as people like to bag on him I think Moreno is much better than any of our other backs. I don't think we can run well on Indy (or anyone right now, sadly) this Sunday. Orton has played well the first two games, but if we abandon the run and lean on him entirely to move the ball then Freeney and Mathis will get us eventually.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility of us seeing quite a bit of Tebow on Sunday. See if we can line him up and run at them. He'd have an extra blocker in front of him compared to our traditional running game, run the option a bit and see how that goes. Important we show a willingness to throw the ball though if we do use him. Let him go PA and try and hit Thomas on a go route first play out of the gate, that'll give those Indy safeties something to think about.

Leave Tebow out of this. He has no business being in there disrupting the flow of the offense.

Unless you wnat him to line up behind Orton as a Half back. That's fine.

Oh, don't think I'm not worried. It's just that this is the type of game where Josh seems to like to break out the wrinkles. Kind of like New England last year when Josh broke out the wild horses. This is the kind of high profile game where Josh likes to showcase his innovations.

I won't be a bit surprised to see Tebow out there. I doubt that the Colts will be either. The question is whether we execute or they execute. I think that Josh will have some gimmick plays that he'll try but it's really not about the coaching. This game will be decided by how well or poorly each player executes.

To beat the Colts and Payton Manning, you have to execute and keep your head in the game. That's where it's decided...upstairs.

Tomorrow feels more to me like a looming date with the electric chair.

Seriously, though... we know we're an underdog. Old-school Broncos fans will remember and awful lot of that back in the day. There is something fun about the chance to knock off a team like this when you shouldn't. I trust that McD will have the team as prepared as he can, and that we'll play respectably.

Win or lose tomorrow, I just want to be able to take some real positives away from the game. To me, that's mostly what this year is about, at this point.

That said, I hope we kick their asses and smash Manning's ass-face into the turf all day long.

This from the guy who over-reacted on Moreno's injury?

Come on man, our history with Peyton isn't glowing. We have beat him exactly ONCE while he started and play the whole game. Is it unreasonable for me to expect a similar result as all but one of the other results against Peyton?

I dont think so.

If Manning kills us he kills us. I just want to at least give them a game. If we play very well offensively we'll be able to do it. Manning beats alot of teams with way better D's then ours. Just don't roll over FIGHT

Agreed, you're going to have to score and come up with a couple big defensive plays to beat them.

With the way our season has gone this might very well happen, but they probably won't be fake.

The way I see it, we have nothing to lose tomorrow. Whatever happens, the haters are going to hate. If we don't show any progress against the Colts, there are a million excuses... The Offensive Line, Moreno's Injury, Dumervil, etc.

But man, if we were to pull off a win tomorrow, that's all coaching and teamwork. I hear you about the feeling of a date with an electric chair. Everyone expects a loss - or at least they should. But given that, I'm excited to see what Josh has up his sleeve, and will hope against hope while I can that we somehow pull the upset. Just thinking about it gets me giddy.

peyton kills blitzes, but i think if we all out blitz man zero it could catch him off guard a little...

i remember back in 05 when we hosted philly we literally rushed 8 after the QB almost every down...it was crazy risky but it threw philly for a loop at 1st...it worked for the 1st half of the game...the 2nd half they adjusted but by that time our lead was too big for them to overcome...

i feel like we got nothin to lose here, i'd like to see the same level of gambling this sunday....

One thing that really worries me that I don't think anyone has mentioned yet: how is our O-line gonna give Orton enough time to deliver the ball? Freeney and Mathis were ALL OVER Eli last week. They were getting in Eli's face almost every dropback. If Orton doesn't have enough time back there, we're in some trouble.

if we play back Peyton will hit Clark, Wayne, Collie, etc... for intermediate gains all the way down the field ending in a time consuming drive
after a few of these our defense will get gassed and provide no resistance at all for them in the 2nd half

if we blitz a lot we might at least get a turnover or cause Manning to make a mistake

I have seen Manning pick slowly pick this team about time and time again, time for something different

enough of this bend but dont break crap

well I think thats just a given
Freeney against a gimpy Clady and Mathis against a rookie...equals huge advantage for Colts

we are gonna need to keep our TEs and RBs in to block a lot and hope Thomas rapps their secondary
