Colts-Broncos: 10 observations
By Doug Kretz Scouts Inc. Indianapolis at Denver When: 4:15 PM ET Watch: CBS Preview More scouting reports: Week 3 Scouts Inc. Position Advantage QB INDY RB DEN WR INDY OL DEN DL INDY LB DEN DB INDY (? Must be related to health questions) ST DEN Coach INDY (Manning serves double-duty on this one) After breaking down film of both teams, Scouts Inc. offers 10 things to watch in this week's Colts-Broncos matchup. 1. Indianapolis will test Denver's corners early and often: With the Broncos' two starting cornerbacks limping out of the locker room after Denver's win over the Seattle Seahawks, we can be sure that Peyton Manning will test them, or their replacements, early. Manning is one of the best at creating mismatches and forcing single coverage on his wideouts, and he is going to want to find out how well CBs Andre' Goodman and Champ Bailey are playing after getting hurt in Week 2. 2. Expect the Colts to crowd the box: If the Colts have an Achilles' heel, it is their ability to stop the run against power running teams, and they have struggled against Denver in the past. They got scorched by the Texans' Arian Foster for 231 yards in Week 1 but did fare better against the New York Giants, holding New York to 120 rushing yards. Denver will throw the ball, but coach Josh McDaniels likes to establish the run first in order to help the play-action pass work. 3. Even Peyton Manning benefits from an effective running game: Manning had a relatively pedestrian 109.8 passer rating against Houston when the team had only 10 rushing attempts. In Week 2 Manning benefited from over 40 rushing attempts with Joseph Addai getting 92 yards on 20 carries and Donald Brown rushing for 69 yards on 16 attempts. With the two backs averaging a very respectable 4.6 and 4.3 yards per carry, respectively, Manning had a quarterback rating of 145.5 as he connected on 20 of 26 attempts. 4. Look for the Colts to use a lot of nickel and dime packages: This probably will be a game that is loaded with a lot of situational substitution packages. While the Colts can't afford to let Denver run the ball up and down the field, they will need extra defenders on the back end as Denver likes to use a lot of trips sets and flood the secondary with receivers. Indianapolis' cornerbacks like to gamble in obvious passing situations because they know teams don't get much time to run routes, thanks to the ferocious pass rush Indy's front four can mount. 5. Matchup to watch: Indianapolis RDE Dwight Freeney vs. Denver LT Ryan Clady: Freeney drives left tackles crazy each week with his explosive take-off and upfield acceleration. Clady is a massive left tackle who plays light on his feet and has heavy hands as he contacts the pass-rusher. This should be a classic battle. 6. Denver needs to establish the ground game: When the Colts lose it's generally because their opponent runs the ball effectively and does a good job of staying out of third-and-long situations. Denver has a history of running the ball against this defense, and if QB Kyle Orton wants time to sit in the pocket and let his receivers run their routes, the Broncos need to establish the run and slow down the speed rush of Indianapolis coming off the edge. 7. Expect Denver to flood the secondary with extra coverage: Denver defensive coordinator Don Martindale will not get a lot of sleep this week as he heads into Sunday's game with his two starting cornerbacks not at full speed. Goodman suffered a thigh injury in Week 2 but should be good to go, while Bailey injured his right foot and will be more questionable (he left the field on crutches). Martindale will want to provide as much help as possible on the back end as he faces Manning and his stable of receivers. 8. Run off tackle: The best way to attack a speed defense is to run right at it. The Colts have added needed bulk to the middle of their defense, with Daniel Muir and Fili Moala both tipping the scales at over 300 pounds. Denver has two quality tackles in Clady and Ryan Harris, so don't be surprised to see them attack the Colts' undersized defensive ends when running the ball. 9. Look for size mismatches on the perimeter: The Broncos' first-round pick, WR Demaryius Thomas, was inactive in Week 1 but came back to lead the team with eight catches for 97 yards against the Seahawks. The 6-foot-3 receiver will have a huge size advantage over both of Indianapolis' starting corners. 10. Matchup to watch: Denver RB Knowshon Moreno vs. Indianapolis MLB Gary Brackett: Denver has a history of successfully running the ball on the Colts' front seven. Moreno was held to 51 yards on 24 carries by the Seahawks and will be itching to get untracked in this game. He is a patient runner who knows how to use his blockers and does a good job of finishing his runs after initial contact. Brackett is a solid tackler who is being counted on to pick up some of the slack now that SS Bob Sanders is hurt. Prediction Indianapolis 27 Denver 21 Last edited by Rulon Velvet Jones; 09-23-2010 at 09:51 AM.. |

27 pts? They're smoking crack if they think it'll be that few.

If it's within a TD then it should be a decent game.

Shenanigans...
Clearly editors of Scouts Inc do not read the Orangemane. Clearly we are to be destroyed by the Colts. ![]() |

Does Scouts Inc. ever predict a blowout?
the part about Moreno cant be true though, had he read the Mane he would of known Moreno is an injury prone, slow scat back that makes Tatum Bell look like Jim Brown |

Obviously always hope for a win but if we can gain some confidence and get healthy for the Titans I'll be happy.
If we can get to 2-2 that's pretty much what I expected, and I would be fine with it especially after the ****ing Jacksonville game. |

Apparently, Scouts Inc. thinks Moreno is pretty good. However, is Harris healthy? If Denver can run the ball right at the Colts defense, not turn the ball over and play good STs (granted, this is asking a lot) the game should be close.

If Nolan didn't have his head up his ass for the first three drives last year we probably would have won.
With a better team this year I don't think a win is really that unreasonable, not at all actually. Wink better be ****ing ready. |

Really? We shouldn't run up the middle because of Daniel Muir and Fili Moala? Who the **** is Daniel Muir?

Me too. Rookie corners could be starting with no pass rush. They're weak against the run (mostly by choice) and our rush attack is a work in progress. Fast DE's against banged up tackles or even backups. Seattle moved the ball quite easily on us, and we're supposed to magically slow down the Colts? I hope through some miracle we can keep it close, but my expectations are not even kids table high.

I also think we might see a few Tebow appearances. Establishing the run is all important in this game, to keep Manning off the field.
