Broncos look to use home field to their advantage against Seattle

September 18th, 2010 12:15 am MT

Home field advantage was once a staple of the Denver Broncos' success.

In fact from 1983 to 1998, the Broncos had one of the best home records in the NFL with a record of 101- 26 during that span.

And even though Denver has won 10 straight home openers, some of that luster has left.

The Broncos have only gone 8-8 at home the past two seasons, including three home losses to division foes last season.

"It is very important. Pretty much every team says the same things at the beginning of the year. We want to take care of the house and then do what we need to do on the road to have a home mentality as far as the team is concerned. Home is always important, you always want to take care of the house," safety Brian Dawkins said.

Now the Broncos will look to continue their streak and bounce back from a Week 1 loss to Jacksonville as they host Seattle, who shocked many by upsetting the San Francisco 49ers 31-6 last week under new head coach Pete Carroll.

Head coach Josh McDaniels knows the importance of getting off to a good start and getting the crowd involved early.

"I think one of the big keys for us is when we play well early at home it's a huge advantage, certainly, and we are going to always focus on trying to get off to a great start and giving our fans a great deal of energy and helping them become a major factor in the game because that's what they were in a lot of our wins last year," McDaniels said.

But that task won't be so easy with Seattle's revamped offense led by the ageless Matt Hasselbeck.

Hasselbeck may not be the most colorful quarterback in the NFL, but he was solid last week and is getting respect from Broncos players.

"Now that's one guy that doesn't get the credit that he deserves - he's been around for a while, he's done," cornerback Champ Bailey said.

The last time the Broncos lost their home opener was 1999 when they lost to the Miami Dolphins 38-21 in the first game in the post-John Elway era. They would finish 6-10 that season.

Orton did fairly poorly at home last year when you look at his split statistics. Same for chicago tho he won more games there. Winning begins with him, and requires momentum, something this offense has been poor at.

Broncos have a good chance of winning if the RB's don't fumble on sustained drives, personnel foul face mask penalties are eliminated, TE's know their assignments and don't force unneccessary timeouts in the red zone and ST becomes special.

I think because it was his first year and he was still uncomfortable in the system. He's doing better and seems more comfortable, I think if he continues to play well, the fan's approval at home will help him with that home field advantage.

I hope we can be a force at home again. I'm tired of sucking at home.
