If you hired someone who had been fired for unethical behavior that lead to a competitive advantage, then you're at minimum complicit in the repeated unethical behavior and, more likely, a party to that unethical behavior for a competitive advantage.

No doubt he took the fall. I doubt that he was so clueless that he couldn't have found someone else to cheat, if he wanted to.
