Default shanahan on 87.7fm

Les Shapiro interviewed Mike Shanahan today on the new denver sports radio station (87.7 fm). A summary -

What's up with albert haynesworth?

He's ready to go. He looks in shape.

How do you feel about donovan mcnabb?

His record in philly speaks for itself. He's a great great athlete,
a natural leader, and he has alot of confidence in his ability. He has
the lowest interception rate ever from an NFL quarterback. And he can make plays with his legs.

How are the Redskins at running back?

We have good depth with proven nfl players They all did a good job in the off season program

What was the biggest change from being away from football for a year?

It was a good break. I found there are alot of people
who work everyday - there was nobody to do things with (laughs)

On your old team, the broncos, some of the key young players you acquired (cutler, marshall, scheffler) have been traded away. How do you feel about that?

It's hard to walk in somebody else's shoes. Everybody has
a philosophy - Josh has his own style. We had a zone blocking system and good young talent - we thought we were headed in the right direction that last year. It will take josh some time to get the personnel he wants to fit his system.

How is your son doing as the offensive coordinator?

He's been around football all his life. He was on the sidelines during
the super bowl years. He has a great background. The last couple of years
when calling plays for gary (kubiak) houston's offense was #1. He has some great insights and philosophies. We are working with his ideas and some things we've done in the past in Denver. i feel good of where we are at

The broncos and redskins each have a long sellout streak. You are walking into another pro town with a college atmosphere.

I'm looking forward to it. Playing our opener sunday night with dallas at home will be exciting. I feel very fortunate to be in a town with great tradition and fans, very similar to denver.

Redskins went from having the worst coach with the worst QB in the division to the best combo overnight, their fans must be pretty excited.

I miss Shanahan. I wish he would have found himself a good d coordinator before he got fired. I think that offense and a guy like Nolan controlling the defense could have won a lot of games. It is hard to accept the way this team now deals with players after having a pro like Shanahan around for so long.

I'll be rooting for them but the Skins probably won't finish better than 3rd place in the NFC East, and possibly 4th.

Word is he failed his conditioning test. But hey, it took Cody 3 times to pass his, so Al oughta get it right in, say, 4 more tries.

Shanahan may be the HC and McNabb may be the QB, but Snyder is still the owner and that will always equal FAIL.

You're right. Shanahan neverhad conflicts with players or coaches.

Here's the difference: when Shanahan experienced a conflict, he was afforded the benefit of the doubt from you and most other fans. Portis was a prima-dona. Coyer and Bates "had to go". etc. etc. etc.

wasn't his refusal to fire his defensive coordinator the main issue with Bowlen when he fired Mike? Personally a 24-24 record the last 3 years was reason enough to send him packing.

You can always go be a skins fan. Actually, I encourage you to leave for greener pastures. The sun never sets on Mike Shanahan, please follow him out the door...

Maybe....but I suspect that the QB who went to Oakland (irony of ironies) won't be missed.

I dislike the skins because they destroyed my team in a SB....but I've always like Gibbs and am a big fan of Shanahan. He will coach this team to 1st place. Watch. That first game is now on my list of must watch games this fall.

I hope Shanny does well in Washington.

I also want the Broncos to win a playoff game before the next decade goes by.

Dislike?

They're forever damned in my book for that and I don't care who the HC is.

Give credit where credit is due. The Broncos were BEATEN. They didn't have a blown call beat them.....they were destroyed by a better team-who were coached by a BETTER coach. Blaming the other coach is kind of "raiderish" if you asked me.

I agree with everything you are saying. If I were Bowlen, I would have fired him just for saying he wasn't going to fire his coordinator.

. So now they handle stuff the same? What? If McDaniels was in charge of the Skins, they would be missing one of their best players right now. They would get crap compensation by going after picks. I can prove this is true because it has happened multiple times on this team already. Sure, Shanahan has problem players. He also gets all pros that don't set the team back. He replaces one of the best players on the team with a player that was the difference in our one playoff win.

Shanahan does a lot of things way different than McDaniels. If you don't see it, fine. I don't agree with you. I liked Shanahans methods a lot more.
