I know he was a Raider, but you can't argue that he was one mean, tough SOB. RIP. |

That's too bad.
RIP I remember reading his book "They Call Me Assassin" when I was a kid. I guess he kind of fascinated me. Godspeed. |

He is best known for a hit he made against former New England Patriots wide receiver Darryl Stingley in a 1978 pre-season game. The hit paralyzed Stingley from the chest down.
Dam, must of been some kind of hit. |

I remember Coselle talking about that hit for a long time, it was the year after Denver went to the SB and all he could talk about was that hit.

...and if I recall correctly, Tatum never showed any signs of remorse whatsoever for that hit.

I don't know that I would have expected remorse, I doubt that it was his intention. I would have expected him to show concern and contact the guy, which he never did. As with any passing, my heart goes out to his family.

As for doubting his intention, I doubt your doubt. Those guys, in that era, intended on hurting people. Watch any interview with those bad asses, especially Deacon Jones, they WANTED to hurt people. |

I'm very well aware of what Deacon Jones, Dick Butkus, etc., did, and said in that era. I used to watch them, my favorites. I still do not believe they would feel a sense of accomplishment at one of their hits paralyzing a man for life. I believe they wanted their hits to send a message, loud and clear, not maim a man for life. edit: Tatum and Stingley never reconciled. In 1996, they were supposed to meet for a TV appearance, but Stingley called it off after being told it was to publicize Tatum's book. Last edited by gunns; 07-27-2010 at 02:53 PM.. |

That hit on Rod really ticked me off. For one it was the Probowl, two I believe it was the last play of the game where the outcome was already determined. Three neither Williams that made the hit or anyone else come over to see if Rod was okay, as he laid lifeless. Eventually the trainers came over, but Lynch or some other Bronco should of decked Williams back.

I thank you all for showing more respect after a man's death than some of my ChiefsFanz acquaintances. You may be low-life, stinkin' BroncoFanz.... but sometimes you're OK.
"Jack Tatum could hit a man so hard it would lift both his feet off the ground. I remember one game, when the opposing QB tried to scramble for a first down, and Jack knocked him out cold. So they put their back-up in and Jack knocked him out too. Then the punter came in, same thing happened. They ended with their tight-end under center." -Woody Hayes |

Jack Tatum was a dirty player, no question about it. Even in THAT era . . .
I saw the hit on Stingley live . . . a preseason game on NBC. The throw was already past Stingley and Tatum had plenty of time to let up . . . instead he buried his helmet full-steam ahead. It was brutal, nasty and uncalled for. He played to hurt people, not to play good defense, and not to intercept or break up passes. Check out his shot on Sammy White in Super Bowl XI. Another cheap shot. The rookie lost his helmet but somehow held on. Tatum just stood over him proudly like a Lion that had just killed a gazelle. The Raiders were a bunch of thugs. No question about it. Skip Thomas and George Atkinson were not far behind Tatum. |

he wouldn't be on the field in this era...fines and suspensions would abound with the types of shots he delivered.
