Maybe. But regardless of whether I do or don't agree with the other aspects of a candidate's policy beliefs and values, there is no way on Earth that I could possibly support for public office someone who as an adult belonged to certain groups -- Nazi Party, Aryan Nation, NAMBLA....and KKK to name a few.

KKK membership (in Byrd's case, for a period of years) is evidence of profound defects of character and judgement. There's a point beyond which "I made a youthful mistake" or similar excuses just don't cut it. Shame on West Virginia and on the Democrats. (And yes, shame on the Republicans for Strom Thurmond.)

You don't join a group like the KKK and then wake up one day with a revelation that it was all wrong. Maybe he joined through peer pressure at the time or maybe he represses those opinions now (well, did) but unless he was completely incapable of thinking for himself, it's impossible to justify both opposing positions like that, in my opinion.

Eh, I wouldn't buy an overnight change, but I think people can truly change over a period of time. Particularly when you factor in where and when he grew up, it's not that hard to believe he (like many from that generation) came to have new experiences and form new conclusions and regretted his past.

Not to say I was fan of him on the whole, but I'm willing to believe he was genuine in his regret about his earlier racism.
