McCaffrey's camp celebrates football, fun
By Natalie Meisler
The Denver Post

HIGHLANDS RANCH Camper after camper took a handoff from a "coach" inside the 2-yard line or stood in the end zone patiently waiting for a lobbed pass. With each "touchdown" scored, the campers spiked the ball and broke out their best end zone dance.

Such celebrations might be frowned on at most camps, or earn a benching on many high school or college sidelines, but not at the Ed McCaffrey "Dare to Play" football camp for children and young adults with Down syndrome. Every dance is cheered by campers and volunteers.

"It's all about football and fun," said McCaffrey, the former Broncos receiver who retired after the 2003 season. He built a golden reputation on and off the field, but end zone choreography was not among his talents.

"Some of these kids have better touchdown dances than I did," McCaffrey said.

The big day for McCaffrey's minicampers will be a 7-on-7, one-hand touch contest, preceded by a tailgate party at Valor Christian High School.

Each camper partnered with a "buddy" on the Valor football team. The campers idolized the high school players, and the Eagles football players seemed just as happy giving instead of receiving instructions. It helped one Valor player take his mind off his misery.

Valor backup quarterback Cody Thibault, who broke his ankle playing basketball this week, was a magnet for the younger campers who wanted to tackle him.

"I'm helping with whoever needs help," Thibault said.

Campers ages 10 to 25 were welcomed. For most, it was the first experience with football. An exception was Brendan Balmes, a junior at Golden High School. His only carry of the season went for a 46-yard touchdown in a 57-8 rout of Denver North. He was honored as "Exceptional Star of the Year" during the John Lynch Salute the Stars luncheon.

"I like that my friends are here, my buddies are here and my family is here," Balmes said.

The teams will have their own cheerleaders, who

Cameron Cassily flips a left-handed pass while being watched by Phillip Dudley during the Dare to Play football camp at Valor Christian High School run by former Broncos standout receiver Ed McCaffrey. (John Prieto, The Denver Post)have been practicing at their own camp.

"It's just a chance to play football," McCaffrey said. "They don't have football for kids with Down syndrome. They love it. They are having a great time. They love to tackle and throw and catch."

Most of all, they seemed to love their "buddies" on the Valor team. There was a 1-to-1 partner-to-camper ratio with members of the 2009 Class 3A state champs.

After a typical month going to camps at Kansas and Utah campuses, Valor football coach Brent Viesel-meyer said: "This was the thing they looked forward to the most all summer. It's an excellent opportunity to serve for someone else."

The camp had been promoted within Down syndrome organizations and was sponsored by Global Down Syndrome Foundation.

Something special

There are heroes in all sports, and then there are a few special heroes. Such is the case with Cameron Cassily, who flips a left-handed pass while being watched by Phillip Dudley during the "Dare to Play" football camp at Valor Christian High School run by former Broncos standout receiver Ed McCaffrey, right. The camp is designed for those with Down syndrome and is the first of its kind in Colorado.

Tards do love to tackle and run around. I have seen it before. They just smile and make happy grunts. It's very special and heartwarming. Good for ed to spend some time with those things. That's why it's easy to love Ed! Great guy. All class.

You missed the debate... well not really a debate but discussion - there is, in fact, a difference in being retarded and having down syndrome, as they don't always go together.

My son is one of "those things" and I'm willing to bet most people would prefer his company to yours.

Im sorry for my earlier post. I have this aunt in Texas that always says horrible things about people without realizing it and than says " bless their hearts" as if that makes it ok. I always joke like this with my friends because I think she is such an unwittingly horrible person. I forget sometimes that this place is anonymous and no one here knows me personally. I'm very sorry that I offended some people here and especially the father of the down syndrome child. Please forgive me.

I have a sick sense of humor and I'll use it more sparingly from now on.

At first I thought maybe it was a movie quote or something, At the very least I figured you were joking, and I was waiting for you to come back in here and explain it (after all, it was pretty over-the-top)! So I didn't think you were being serious, but I can definitely see how people could think that you were.

Actually my son doesn't have downs syndrome, he had a stroke before he was born and it mentality retarded. I don't usually get offended when people call each other retarded or use the word retarded. However, I thought your comment was way over the line. I don't think it was even sick humor, it was just down right disgusting. That being said, I forgive your comment. If people held every stupid thing I said against me, there would be an endless stream of people pissed off at me. However, I do expect that if we ever meet in person you will buy me a drink.
