Default Your "you've got to be ****ting me" moment of the day

http://deadspin.com/5569277/fisherma...ishing-license

Quote:
A tournament fisherman caught an 883-pound blue marlin off North Carolina last week. That would have won him a $912,000 first prize, but one of the crew members on his boat didn't have a fishing license. So....disqualified. Oops.

Andy Thomossan thought he had set a new record at the Big Rock Blue Marlin Fishing Tournament, when his monster catch was easily the largest one pulled out of the water during the week-long event. But during a standard post-contest lie detector test—yes, that is actually standard; this **** is serious—organizers discovered that one of the "for-hire mates" on his boat did not have a North Carolina fishing license. The tournament rules require everyone on the crew to have one, even the chum wranglers whose only responsibilities include baiting hooks and keeping the beer cold. Carolina residents can purchase a 10-day license for $5.

Thomossan did not appreciate the irony.

"It hurts," said angler Andy Thomossan. "No record. No money. No fish. No nothing. Yep, it's a nice ending to the story, isn't it?"

"We didn't do anything wrong. But one of our people did. He failed to get a fishing license, but we didn't know it. He told us he had it. He didn't. So you take a man for his word, you know? I can't do anything."

Fishing without a license in North Carolina carries a $35 fine and $125 in court costs, plus about a million bucks to anyone you happen to screw out of a record jackpot. This scofflaw also might end up fishing with Fredo, if you catch my drift.
Wow talk about rage.

That guy is lucky, this happened in Carolina, a 100 years ago that issue would be settled at midnight with torches and pitchforks and an angry lynchmob.

Your wrong because 100 yrs ago you wouldn't need a license to fish.

It didn't really sink in how terrible this story is until I said it out loud to my wife. Seeing the "what an unbelievable dumbass" look on my wife's face really brought a certain texture to the story. Plus that face reminds me of my college antics, so there was a bit of nostalgia.

I don't mean the license, I mean costing someone else a fishing record and a million bucks by lying.

I would turn the boat around head out to where the shelf is off of North Carolina give him a life ring some water and tell him to have a nice swim back to shore. Depending on where they were based out of that is 30 miles minimum!

That is tongue in cheek of course but the thought would seriously take some consideration!

Seeing that the guy couldn't come up with a $5 fishing license, suing him for $900K won't do much good. I'm just saying.

It sucks that you can't take a man at his word.

That has become the rule and not the exception. Entropy.

Usually that's true because attorneys won't take the case unless people have deep pockets. My family full of attorneys though. More then once people have learned the hard way not to **** us illegally. One guy had nothing, we sued him, his still paying my sister 125.00 week out of his pay check.

You are right though if the guy is poor chances are no atty will take the case.

It doesn't sound like much when the person screwed you on 30 grand, but it adds up over the yrs.

I'm not capable of such long division, how many months would it take to pay off $912,000 at $125 a month?

Just being a pain. I agree the best he could hope for is a moral victory. I bet everyone that hears the guy's story will check their worker's licenses from now on though.

Sounds like a lesson learned to me. If you are out fishing for a 900 grand prize, better make sure all of your shiat is in order.

Not necessarily.

Did he sign something that said he had a license? Nowhere in the article does it say that. Even the "victim" admits he was going on the guy's word alone.

If he didn't sign a one week employment contract with the fisherman or sign anything to enter the competition saying that he had such a license, then they have zero to go on here. In such a case, all the guy has to do is say that he was either never asked about a license or he could even claim that he was upfront about having no license and there's no way the fisherman could ever prove otherwise.

It sucks, but this is the way it is.

How many of you defend business owners that hire illegal immigrants because they don't ask for proof of citizenship at the time of employment? Same basic policy here IMO. Maybe it's because I work for a law firm and I've seen the ways people get burned every day....but I never go with "yup, we're all good, we have filed the necessary paperwork" without seeing it myself in writing.

Typical mentality of our generation: it's never my fault, someone else must be to blame, and that someone else must be sued.

LMAO at the bass boat moron who got screwed because of a $5 fishing license... is there a more pathetic group of "sportsman" than fisherman? Really, it's not a sport, it's a past time that can pay some money if you are good at it. There's a reason much beer is consumed when fishing...

Now he's not gonna be able to buy that new truck and fifth wheel...
