Default California trying to ensure its place as the laughing stock of the USA

What in the world is going to be next? This state has enough problems with crappy drivers and traffic as it is, this would make it even worse.... if that is possible.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. As electronic highway billboards flashing neon advertisements become more prevalent, the next frontier in distracted driving is already approaching ad-blaring license plates.

The California Legislature is considering a bill that would allow the state to begin researching the use of electronic license plates for vehicles. The move is intended as a moneymaker for a state facing a $19 billion deficit.

The device would mimic a standard license plate when the vehicle is in motion but would switch to digital ads or other messages when it is stopped for more than four seconds, whether in traffic or at a red light. The license plate number would remain visible at all times in some section of the screen.

In emergencies, the plates could be used to broadcast Amber Alerts or traffic information.

The bill's author, Democratic Sen. Curren Price of Los Angeles, said California would be the first state to implement such technology if the state Department of Motor Vehicles ultimately recommends the widespread use of the plates. He said other states are exploring something similar.

Interested advertisers would contract directly with the DMV, thus opening a new revenue stream for the state, Price said.

"We're just trying to find creative ways of generating additional revenues," he said. "It's an exciting marriage of technology with need, and an opportunity to keep California in the forefront."

At least one company, San Francisco-based Smart Plate, is developing a digital electronic license plate but has not yet reached the production stage. The bill would authorize the DMV to work with Smart Plate or another company to explore the use and safety of electronic license plates.

The company's chief executive, M. Conrad Jordan, said he envisioned the license plates as not just another advertising venue, but as a way to display personalized messages broadcasting the driver's allegiance to a sports team or an alma mater, for example.

"The idea is not to turn a motorist's vehicle into a mobile billboard, but rather to create a platform for motorists to show their support for existing good working organizations," he said.

Stay classy California

Just like a heroin junkie willing to shoot up drano. California's so addicted to spending that it's willing to do ANYTHING to get its hands on more taxpayer money to feed the need to shop.

New state motto: California, the nation's crack whore. We prefer to be pretty on the outside.

I guess I'd want to see more details but there's no way I'm gonna drive around blindly advertising for someone. There's no way they'd force that. Maybe you could get free plates or something by allowing the advertising to be there, who knows.

Thankfully I'm not going to California anytime soon.

Hilarious. People are going to have to take their car into the shop to get their license plate installed and serviced.

"Yea, I'm going to be late for work today. My license plate is acting up, have to take it to the shop."

Thank God. Now I won't have to spend the time needed to pull out my screwdriver and swap plates when I boost.

I can press a button and hack the plate. Should definitely be a time saver.

And that's why it'd be a joke. Force advertising on me and mine will mysteriously short every time I have some free time to go get another. It'd just be a moral victory but over time they'd realize the cost isn't really worth the investment, I think. Someone could walk down the road smacking plates with a hammer and people'd shrug their shoulders as it'd be state money being lost.

Definitely a bad idea.

Yeah, I guess that's why people keep moving here by the droves every year. That's why Pheonix has now become the 5th largest city in the US. Because everybody hates it here so much, they would never consider moving here, hahahaha.

God bless Arizona and the Governor for such a bold move to keep America 'American'.

I feel overcome by joy to think that there are still good politicians out there.

California needs Arizona's power, water and prisons.

And I would label a 19 billion dollar deficit as more than a problem.

CA has been run by idiot politicians for years and need other states' help for power and water and has run many people and businesses away with their high taxes. That's how great CA has been doing.

Arizona is known for not paying its teachers worth a damn and used to be as bad as CA when it came to doing nothing about the border.

What about how california has given more then feds give us back though. Other states get more dollars from feds then they give. Whe because of states like CA, TX, FL and some other big ones Ill who knows maybe even AZ but I doubt it. More then likely Ariz has grown because of CA.
