This is the only Broncos blog that tells it like it is . . . denver post, denverbroncos.com, etc. are for fans who have only heard of John Elway and prefer the new stadium over the old.

I'll listen. Maybe you should mention all-purpose yards, punt return yards, kickoff returns. Floyd had a lot of punt returns and kickoff returns. For solid averages.

http://www.pro-football-reference.co...L/LittFl00.htm

Floyd has the AFL/NFL stigma though, where some of what he did was in the AFL, some in the NFL. But, his total stats got him into the HOF, so run with it.

Floyd was one of the most important players that played the game, there's no doubt about that. He put Denver on the map, and we've seen what that has led to.

What he accomplished bridged that gap between the AFL and the NFL. Dude opened his "NFL" career this way:

YPG rushing:
1970 NFL 64.4 (4)
1971 NFL 80.9 (1)

Touches:
1970 NFL 254 (5)
1971 NFL 317 (1)
1972 NFL 255 (8)

All-purpose yards:
1970 NFL 1375 (6)
1971 NFL 1587 (4)
1973 NFL 1409 (7)

Yards from Scrimmage:
1970 NFL 1062 (9)
1971 NFL 1388 (1)
1973 NFL 1402 (3)

Rushing attempts:
1970 NFL 209 (5)
1971 NFL 284 (1)
1972 NFL 216 (10)
1973 NFL 256 (7)

(Boy, Pro Football Reference screwed up missing the 1972 year on a lot of Floyd's stats!)

Add in these awards:

1969 Associated Press: 1st Team All-AFL
Pro Football Writers: 2nd Team All-AFL
Hall of Fame: 2nd Team All-AFL
Newspaper Ent. Assoc.: 1st Team All-AFL

Wow, thanks for putting this all together for me!

I have a lot of these stats but not so succinctly divided into AFL/NFL so thanks.

Now that Floyd's in, we don't have to push his stats so much anymore. He's in and like you said, he was much more than a star player. He put Denver on the map!

So I am going to push some of the other great overlooked Broncos. Everyone knows about Gradishar and the modern players who will probably get in someday . . . TD, Sharpe, Nalen, Atwater and Rod Smith.

But what about Billy Thompson, Rich Jackson, Louie Wright, Tommy Jackson, Alzado and older guys like Lionel Taylor and Goose Gonsolin?

These guys need to be put in the discussion. I think Gradishar and the modern guys will make it in the next 5-8 years. So I'm not worried about them.

Hey, Moops, I heard the first segment, enjoyed it. They said they lost the phone connection for the second segment, what happened?

Rich Jackson, the old head-slap days. Tombstone Jackson used that head-slap well. It was outlawed in 1977. Lord, those OL guys took a major beating before it was outlawed. The DB's would use it at the LOS also on the WR's.

It's a lot "prettier" game these days. Those old-timers ("old-timers" being only 30 years ago) on the OL had it pretty rough when they couldn't hold but could get a forearm to the earhole as soon as the ball was snapped. Those "old-time" QB's also took a lot more punishment than modern QB's. Same goes for "old-time" WR's, they had to battle like crazy to get open. There was no such thing as can't be held five yards past the LOS.

Nowadays it's like a bunch of hairy ballerinas out there on the field.

It was a miscommunication . . . after the first segment, Scrog thanked me and told me they would like to have me back on in August. Thinking that was it, I hung up the phone. I didn't realize he still wanted me to come back for the next segment.

I did a shorter segment an hour or so later, in which I mentioned other Broncos who deserve HOF consideration. I talked a lot about Billy Thompson because he is NEVER discussed when it comes to HOF hopeful Broncos . . . everyone knows Gradishar will probably make it. But Billy is never discussed and he's the most versatile DB to ever play!

I like Thompson for HOF consideration. He was on some good D's and made some classic plays for Denver.

Yup, some of the things fans probably don't know about Billy Thompson . . .

* First Bronco to play 13 seasons (and in 3 decades, 1969-80)

* 2nd most games played in Broncos history -- 179

* Holds team record for most defensive turnovers (40 interceptions and 21 fumble recoveries)

* Only player in NFL history to lead the league in punt returns and kickoff returns in the same season (1969, as a rookie!)

* Scored 7 TDs -- 3 interception returns and 4 fumbles.

The guy was a playmaker!
