Default Suspected terrorists "practiced killing with computer games"

Just on the local NY news. This dangerous and lazy association has to stop.

If anyone is in NY and takes offense to this I recommend writing 7 news. I certainly plan to.

Why? The military practices killing with video games all the time. In my squadron we had 4 different types of flight simulators. Similar experience for a fraction of the cost.

All I can see is your original post with no story behind it. It's certainly plausible.

I'm still waiting for the link or the article. What kind of terrorist? Hijackers? Microsoft Flight sim is only missing actual motion to give the full flying experience. If you can fly instruments, you can fly in anything. That is what flight sims give, instrument practice. The Navy's flight sims are a lot better than that, adding motion and pretty good video to the flight controls/cockpit.

Uh no. It is neither dangerous nor lazy. Just like you can question the Army releasing games that encourage killing, you should be able to question the effect that violent video games have both as training, and as a dehumanization experience.

I know video game lovers hate the fact, but FPS's are all about encouraging violence. They assume that the player has the mental capacity to distinguish between real and fake. But there are those who certainly can not tell a difference, and some, like these individuals who choose not too.

What a moronic argument. The article didn't state they were terrorists because they played FPS, it said that a group of terrorists were playing FPS, and treating it as practice.

On the other hand, you might believe that your duty in life is to go kill Americans, in which case you probably are.

I heard something about this on the news too. However, unless these terrorist suspects are playing games specifically designed for terrorist activities (making an IED out of a cell phone, throwing rocks at an amored personell carrier, strapping TNT to yourself and walking into a market and blowing yourself up, growing opium, etc...) then just about any of the violent para-military games could qualify. Just saying...

just like they did with Heavy Metal and Rap Music in the 1980's.

There is a difference between a simulator and interactive entertainment. Call of Duty for example is nowhere close to real life. It doesn't teach you how to fire a gun or any other tactics. It is no more desensitizing than watching an episode of 24 or a movie.

I play BC2, and just got done playing a quick bit of Just Cause 2. Frankly if you even relate a video game to outside life you're a pathetic waste of human. I totally am getting the urge to parachute out the back of my truck before driving it into the local gas station, though.

Fking idiots.

What an ignorant comment.

We use video games in training, why wouldn't terrorists resort to the same type of training which saves money and simulates action?

BTW: who gives a **** about gaming? Grow UP! Get a LIFE!

I give a **** about gaming. It's what I do for a living. Games also generate more money than the film industry and have made massive strides towards being an invaluable cultural medium. Blanket accusations are extremely unhelpful. Chances are these people either have never played a game or have extremely outdated impressions. It's no different from when Bob Dole attacked movies in the 90s or when the British government attacked the novel in the early 19th century.

If you don't play games, don't comment on them.

I have no issue with any kind of video game. My argument is that some video games could have value as a training tool. That is no knock on the gaming industry, just a valid observation. The article also said they used virtual reality games, not average consuls like XBOX360 or PS3.

The average age of gamers is in their 30's now I believe with a nearly 50/50 male to female ratio. Games aren't just for kids and nerds in the basement. The next wave of Hollywood action movies will be video game movies when the comic book franchises run out of characters. Time to readjust your idea of what gaming is and who gamers are.

Fair enough. You guys are the military folk but to me outside of Full Spectrum Warrior and America's Army (which were designed by the army as simulations for squad tactics and boot camp respectively) I don't see how any shooters would train you for anything other than immediate death.

Is that an unwritten law?

......and to top it off: "an invaluable cultural medium"
